2025 OHSAA Tournament: Division IV State Semifinal - #2 Lake Catholic (Mentor) vs #7 Unioto

AKRON - Lake Catholic finally broke through in the sixth inning and beat Unioto 5-3 in the Division IV state semifinals at Thurman Munson Stadium on Friday.

The Cougars had left eight on base and trailed 3-1 in the sixth before pushing across four runs on four hits, and then shut down the Shermans in the seventh for a trip to the state finals for the first time in school history.

Pete Malchesky hit a run-scoring single, AJ Trobenter had a two-run base hit and Micah Nyetrae capped off the scoring with a fielder’s choice RBI grounder in the sixth for Lake Catholic, which outhit the Shermans 10-2.

Ashland commit Patrick Radigan struck out a dozen in his two-hit performance to pick up the win for the second-ranked team in D-IV, which scored a run in the fourth on singles from Tyler Hribar and Caden Boyes.

KB Perkins doubled to highlight a two-run Unioto second inning and the seventh-rated Shermans added a run in the top of the sixth on a RBI infield single from Perkins.

Lake Catholic will take on the winner of Perkins and Indian Hill in the state title game on Sunday at 10 a.m. at Canal Park.

HOT TAKES

PLAYER OF THE GAME: A gutsy performance with 121 pitches (73 for strikes) was given by Radigan, the senior right-hander who fanned the final two batters of the game to finish with 12. He struck out the side in the first inning to give a taste of what was to come in his two-hitter.

WHAT’S NEXT?: After reaching state for the first time in 31 years, Unioto has high hopes for the future with just two seniors in the lineup for veteran head coach Tony Taylor, though big shoes are there to fill with the graduation of Findlay recruits Keegan Snyder and Perkins.
