Coastal Plain League: Wilson Tobs

WILSON, N.C. — The Coastal Plain League’s Wilson Tobs were forced to cancel the remainder of their schedule on Aug. 3 after a COVID-19 outbreak, but they put together a strong season, finishing 13-5 overall and 9-5 against CPL opponents. I got a chance to catch four Wilson games before its season was cut short, enough to fill up my notebook with observations on Tobs prospects. Let’s break down Wilson’s standouts:

• Wilson’s best pitching prospect is an easy call: UT Tyler righthander Matthew McMillan had by far the best arm strength on the roster. After posting a 1.62 ERA and seven saves along with 26 strikeouts in 16.2 innings this spring, McMillan continued to miss bats in his four relief appearances for the Tobs, striking out six in four innings of work. He has a clear bullpen profile with some effort in his high three-quarters frame, but his arm works and the 6-foot-4, 205-pounder has good downhill angle. McMillan sat comfortably...
