On the Hunt: Athletic Outfielders

Athletic outfielders have been popping up all over the country, and On the Hunt locks in on seven of them this week. Three of the seven show advanced speed, and should end up hitting at the top of some schools lineup at the next level. The other four (3 LHH), are going to have a chance to really hit, and possibly with some power. With players hailing from Minnesota, New Jersey, Ohio, and Tennessee, the talented core of uncommitted outfielders will not stay that way for long.

Kyle Westfall OF / 2B / Moeller, OH / 2019

Westfall’s athleticism was on full display when I watched him at the PBR Ohio Top Prospect Games. His 6.6 60-yard dash will turn heads quickly, but it was his loose, twitchy hands at the plate that made me jump on board. The 5-foot-11, 168-pound right-handed hitter has quick hands with a loose finish, and balance. He showed consistent line drive power in batting practice, and sprayed more around to all fields in the game. His speed plays well on the base paths, and he has a chance to be a real threat at the next level. Defensively, Westfall bounces around with athleticism, and shows off a slightly above average arm right now that is accurate, and should continue to develop as his frame adds strength. I like the prospect of Westfall as a future centerfielder at a high level in college who will hit at the top of the order.

Devin Hack OF / LHP / Somerville, NJ / 2019

There are few things not to like about the 5-foot-11, 165-pound Hack. He’s a 6.8 runner with sure hands in the outfield who possesses a strong, 86 mph positional arm. At the plate, he is balanced with a simple, light leg kick, and short hands load. His hands are quick, and while he is still developing strength, the ball comes off his bat firmly with line drives flying from gap to gap with occasional pull side power. What I’ve grown to like most about Hack, after seeing him play multiple games, is his persistent energy, and workmanlike tunnel vision. He runs the bases with determination, rarely gets cheated at the plate, and highly accountable in the outfield.
