Texas State Games Underclass: Catcher Analysis

On Saturday, November 8th, the PB Texas staff traveled to Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX, to host the Texas State Games: Underclass, an invite-only event for the class of 2028 and 2029.
More than 80 players made their way to Sam Houston this past weekend and participated in a pro-style workout as well as gameplay, gathering unrivaled access to data through our state-of-the-art tech partners, while receiving in-depth scouting analysis from our Prep Baseball Texas staff.

Today, we take a look at the scouting reports on every catcher in attendance as well as rank the top 8 from the event.
TOP CATCHING PROSPECTS
1. Brody Sharp, Rouse (TX), 2028
Positional Profile: C/SS RHH/C Projects well physically. Moves well on field, run time will increase. Solid defender with quickness to release now. Raw arm strength will develop firming pop times. Shows ability to impact baseball at times, opportunities for adjustments present. Player who will get stronger, can catch, pop times will firm, hits balls hard with opportunities to firm. Watch progress.
Body: 6-0, 187 pounds. Solid build/frame. Width to back. Avg middle/power.
Hit: RHH. Open stance, knee lift stride, lands in good position to hit. Rotational back foot with slight linear movement forward. Develop consistency to linear movement to fully engage lower 1/2 in swing. Hits into firm front leg, stride foot into ground, hits from ground up. Solid posture. Develop core strength with rotational exercises to improve rotational acceleration. With stride, back elbow raises, barrel tips over head creating length to swing. Barrel works around instead of taking direct path to hitting zone. Soften elbow with stride, start barrel in area behind head allowing for more direct path to hit zone. 75.3 mph bat speed with 9g of rotational acceleration.
Power: 104 mph max exit velocity (97.1 avg.); 403-foot max batted distance. Project solid bat/power combo in future with adjustments. Flashes ability to impact baseball now at times. Solid base to work from.
Arm: RH. C - 78 mph. Quickness to release over raw arm strength presently. Pop times will firm as raw arm strength improves. Carry developing, avg accuracy.
Defense: 1.95-2.07 pop time range; Received well in game play. Sets good target. Moves well behind plate. Solid glove to hand exchange.
Athletic Testing: 7.16 runner in the 60-yard dash; 22.70-inch max vertical jump. Runs hard, solid run form, good stride length. Speed will improve, will be at least 7.0 or better runner.
