Uncommitted 2020 Spotlight: C Tyler Davis

FRESNO, CA. - Catchers can often find the recruiting process quite difficult, even clearly talented players. In California there are often MORE scholarship level D1 catching talents than there are opportunities for scholarship players at that level in the state. Often times a D1 program will have one, perhaps two catchers on scholarship, but it's also a position where college programs will look to get walk-ons, recruited or otherwise.

In the case of Davis, the good news is that he is MORE than a catcher, as he's also a talented and experienced 3rd baseman. He is being actively recruited but as of yet, no scholarship offers. We think that will change at some point, sooner or later. We most recently saw him at our Uncommitted Senior Games, here is what we've seen of 2020 C Tyler Davis of San Joaquin Memorial HS.

 


Scouting Report

10/06/19 - PBR NorCal Uncommitted Senior Games - High waisted, strong squared athletic frame with some space for projection. High hands stance with slight bend of the knees; uses a slight foot lift having the hands work back. Hits from behind the baseball timing his direct hands with the back hip allowing the quick hands to get to the baseball and driving through contact; balls jumped off the bat (93 EV) deep into gaps with natural lift in the bat path. Wide base with smooth transition from glove hand showing quick ability to recover from blocks; quick and smooth footwork allows the release to be consistent. Adding arm strength (75 MPH, 2.07-2.13 Pop) will be a positive for the profile. During games the defensive skills were on display having snap throws behind runners and showing consistently solid blocking skills and glove work. Offensively put together quality AB’s working counts deep and squaring the ball up with a long flyout to LF.

10/06/19 - PBR Norcal Uncommitted Senior Games - Quick Hits notes: Shined as perhaps the top overall defensive player at the event. Lean strong body on 6-foot-1, 185-pound frame, both strong and athletically agile behind the plate. Outstanding receiver on both sides of the plate, good both up and down in the zone, and with fastballs and offspeed pitches. Blocks balls in dirt as well as he receives. Pop times in workout from 2.07-2.13 with 75 mph as his high velocity. His footwork and agility work very well for him as a thrower. The release can shorten a bit and a bit more arm strength are areas for improvement. He will be able to catch top collegiate pitching. Offensively posted 93 mph exit velocity and showed good catcher footspeed with 7.07 60-yard dash.

7/11/19 - Area Code Tryout - Uncommitted; Lean athletic build with lanky proportions, good body for the position, defensively the footwork and release allow his raw arm (72-73 mph) to play up; offensively took him a bit to work toward a comfort level, loose swing, has some wrap at in the set-up which creates length, does possess good bat speed, though barrel control was lacking a bit in this BP session; however, his live AB game swings were competitive, with a hard 5-3 (vs 87 mph FB from RHP) and 4-3 (vs 87 mph FB from RHP). Among uncommitted catchers in the 2020 class he is one to check in on for programs that have need. Plays at a highly successful HS program, with back to back section titles.
