South Suburban JC Scout Day: Takeaways

On Thursday, October 14th, the Prep Baseball Illinois staff traveled to South Suburban College to host the South Suburban College Scout Day, where around 15 players went through a pro-style workout.
Today, we are taking a look at some of the biggest standouts from the day with scouting reports and videos, below.
Position Players
So. CIF Ruby Perez (Brother Rice, IL)
Perez, a 5-foot-11, 200-pounds infielder, put together an all-around quality showing at the Scout Day earlier this month. The sophomore started the day running a 7.14 60-yard dash which ranked fifth among the crop. The right-hander was on the barrel throughout BP, working on top of the ball. Perez had a max EV of 97 mph with an average of 92 mph with an average bat speed of 71 mph. Defensively, threw 82 mph across, the second best velocity of the event.
Fr. MIF Benjamin Geary (St. Laurence, IL)
Physical, 6-foot-1, 200-pound frame, Geary had the loudest performance of the afternoon, started the event running a 7.04 60-yard time and followed that up with an impressive round of BP. Geary had an event best, 104 mph max EV and an average of 96 mph. Geary also had an event best max batted distance of 379’. Grary showed strength throughout the BP, had the best average bat speed at 78 mph, and also impressed on defense. The infielder flashed smooth actions and tossed 80 mph across the diamond. An incoming freshman looking to make an impact for the Bulldogs.

FR INF Benjamin Geary looks to be an impact bat for the Bulldogs.

So. OF Louie Sisto (St. Rita, IL)
Another physical athlete for the Bulldogs, Sisto measures 6-foot-2, 225-pounds and showed some athleticism throughout. The sophomore ran a 7.01 60-yard time at the beginning of the event and followed that up with a loud round of BP. Sisto recorded the second best max EV of 100 mph, averaging 89 mph and had a max distance of 360’. The LHH worked the gaps throughout and flashed some bat speed with an average of 71 mph. Sisto had an event best 88 mph OF velocity.

SO OF Louie Sisto had an .829 OPS through 29 games last spring while driving in 21 runs.

Fr. C Enrique Villanueva (St. Laurence, IL)
5-foot-9, 204-pounds, the backstop impressed at the plate working line drives throughout the round and maxing out his EV at 98 mph with an average of 89 mph. Villanueva had the second best bat speed average at 74 mph. Defensively, the backstop had a pop time ranging between 1.96-2.09 and tossed 79 mph from the chute.

FR C Enrique Villanueva is a backstop to know on the Bulldogs roster.

Rs. So. OF Frederick Ragsdale III (Lyons Township, IL)
Athletic, 5-foot-8, 160-pound frame, Ragsdale looked to be the most athletic prospect at the event, ran an event best 6.75 60-yard time, and showed a smooth controlled swing during BP. Had a peak EV of 93 mph with an average of 88 mph, showed feel for the barrel throughout.

RSO OF Frederick Ragsdale III had a .506 OBP last spring while stealing 37 bases and scoring 70 runs.

Pitchers
So. LHP Carter Green (Homewood-Flossmoor, IL)
A 6-foot left-handed sophomore had an impressive bullpen during the Bulldog’s Scout Day. Green recorded the hardest fastball of the day coming in at 87.2 mph coming from a quick high 3/4 slot. Showed both a four seam and two seam fastball, with the four seam spinnings at 2,200 RPMs and the two seam 2,210. Backing off the fastball was a curveball and changeup. Green’s curveball had tight rotations, breaking sharply in a 1/7 shape, the pitch landed for strikes and spun at an average of 2,400 RMPs. His changeup played with late sinking action and had 15.7 inches in horizontal movement.

Fr. RHP Finn McCarty (St. Laurence, IL)
Listed a 6-foot, 170-pounds right-handed pitcher. The freshman is a stretch only pitcher with a long, stabbing arm action with a 3/4 arm slot. McCarty sat 83-85 mph on this fastball topping at 85.1 mph, played with arm-side run having an average of 14.4 horizontal movement. McCarthy showed three off-speed pitches to play off the fastball. The slider had a sharp and late bite that had 17.2 inches of horizontal movement and spun at 1,990 RPMs. His curveball worked down in the zone, with 13.7 inches of movement and spinning at 1,920 RPMs. McCarthy last off-speed a change up with arm-side run having 19.2 inches of movement.
So. LHP Vince Waterman (Homewood-Flossmoor, IL)
Transferring in from Kent State, the 6-foot, 185-pound left-handed pitcher is looking to have an impactful season. Waterman works fast from the stretch only with a 3/4 release slot. His fastball topped out at 87.1 mph, displaying both a four seam and two seam, averaging 2,260 RPMs on the four seam and 2,170 on his two seam. Working off the fastball was his curveball, an early breaking 1/7 action with 2,370 RMPs, 12.9 IVB and 19.9 HM. Waterman displayed a changeup and a cutter (2,200 RMPs).
