2025 NC High School Previews: Volume VII

The 2025 North Carolina high school baseball season is quickly approaching and we’re taking the time to preview the spring ahead by analyzing the top players and programs from each corner of the state.

This offseason, we distributed a preseason questionnaire to North Carolina’s varsity head coaches to help give us a snapshot of the top state contenders, and we’re providing our own analysis on each of the teams’ top prospects and season outlook in these team previews. Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across North Carolina. High School: East Forsyth Eagles

Head Coach: Drew Dull
State Classification: NCHSAA 4A
Conference: Central Piedmont 4A
2024 Record (Finish): 14-10 (Lost 1st round to Charlotte Catholic 4-3)

BOTTOM LINE

+ The Eagles will play a very tough schedule and will be tested each week. The depth of the pitching staff will keep them in games. Can the Eagles create runs by creating some havoc on the basepaths. If so, their stock rises.

High School: Glenn Bobcats

Head Coach: Dustin Ijames
State Classification: NCHSAA 4A
Conference: Central Piedmont 4A
2024 Record (Finish): 17-10 (First round loss @ Weddington)

Key Players Lost: Carmine Lancaster, Evan Britt, Chase Gora, Craig McGhee

+ The Central Piedmont Conference can either build you up or cut you down… How does this club handle the ups and downs of the league. Surviving the league schedule should put the Bobcats in position to be a tough out in the playoffs.

BOTTOM LINE

+ Offensively there is skill but there may not be quick strike ability with power. Defensively they are solid but they may lack an arm that can get needed outs by himself. Can this club thrive throughout the season in close games and put themselves in position to be a club that knows how to win late in games.

Head Coach: Kaleb Houchins
State Classification: NCHSAA 2A
Conference: Mid-State 2A
2024 Record (Finish): 25-3 (Elite 8)

Key Players Lost: Anderson Nance, Seth Sharpe, Lucas Brooks, Carson Moore, Briar Woods, Landon Roberts, Brittyn Barnes, Dylan Stallings

+ How quickly can the younger players adapt to the high expectations that exist within the culture of the Panthers’ program.

BOTTOM LINE

+ The bar is always high with the Panthers. 2025 will see a team that has a chance to rise throughout the year. As the older players lead the younger players through the season they should continue to get better. Be careful drawing this club in a tournament format late in the year.

Conference: CPC
2024 Record (Finish): 5-13

BOTTOM LINE

+ The Spartans ability to create outs on the mound will be a key to the season. There will be some baserunners, so limiting free passes can lengthen the defense’s ability to get out of innings unscathed.

Conference: NorthWest 1A
2024 Record (Finish): 10-15 (Rnd 1)

+ Player development. Roster features a lot of experience. Can that group take the next step forward with the work they have put in during the past year.

BOTTOM LINE

+ Expectations are raised with the returning talent. Can the Viking solidify the No. 1 starter to lengthen their bullpen and how quickly do the younger players acclimate to the Varsity level. If both of these answers come quickly, then buy the Vikings’ stock.

Head Coach: Chris Suggs
State Classification: NCHSAA 3A
Conference: Mid-State 3A
2024 Record (Finish): 11-13

Key Players Lost: N/A

Team Strengths: Team speed, overall defense, depth on the mound

X-FACTOR

+ Defense at a high level can make everything right with the world. It can support a pitching staff, urging them to pound the strike zone. It can give time to an offense that is working to find its footing. The better the defense the Rams play early in 2025, the more length they will see on the bump and in the box throughout the year.

Underclassmen to Watch:
+ Josh Jones
+ Noah Clark
+ Damir Woolridge
+ Paul Mitchell

BOTTOM LINE

+ There is depth on the mound but the Rams will be looking for 1 or 2 arms to step up and take on the task of being top or the rotation starters. Defensively, the pitchers will have support. Offensively, the Rams will be working to build consistency early to create bigger threats as the year goes on.

High School: Oak Grove Grizzlies


Head Coach: Chase Mitchell
State Classification: NCHSAA 3A
Conference: Mid-Piedmont
2024 Record (Finish): 14-12 (4th round)

Key Players Lost: Dawson Shelton- Wingate; Jake Smith- Tusculum; Cale Walters- Tusculum; Keanan White- Carolina University

Team Strengths: The Grizzlies return several players that have experienced a lot of success in the post-season. Balance on the bump and in the lineup should be a key.

X-FACTOR

+ There are strike-throwers on the roster and the outfield defense should be stellar. Look for a deep run to be keyed by consistency on the infield, catching and throwing, to take routine outs when they are presented.

Underclassmen to Watch:
+ Addison Terry- Sophomore catcher

BOTTOM LINE

+ The lineup will have some thump with Kaden Hart providing fear to opposing pitchers. Can the lineup produce enough base runners throughout the game to give the big hitters multiple chances to make a big impact. Also, if the offense can score early, it will allow the Grizzlies a chance to develop some depth in their bullpen without every game resting on their shoulders.
