OUR Q&A:
Prep Baseball: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?
Gunnar: I wanted to be somewhere that would be a good fit not only for the baseball, but community as well. My expectations were not very high, I just knew that when it came time to find a school, the right one would find me. Which is what happened with BYU.
Prep Baseball: Did location play a factor in your decision?
Gunnar: No, I wanted to be outside of the state to see new things, new people, and new experiences.
Prep Baseball: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Where did the school you committed to first see you play?
Gunnar: It really started heating up for me in September of 2024, BYU saw me first play at the WWBA in Florida and that’s when they gained interest and saw potential in me.
Prep Baseball: What do you like most about the program you chose, and what were the key factors in making your decision?
Gunnar: The thing I like most is the community and team, they always help each other out and they have a great bond, which is exactly something I want to be around.
Prep Baseball: Who is the best player you have faced in your state? What about them makes for a tough opponent?
Gunnar: Walker Martin freshman year during live at bats. What makes him such a good hitter is that he can cover the whole plate so you really have to find a way to work around him.
Prep Baseball: At what point in your career did you realize you were a college-caliber player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?
Gunnar: The point I realized I was a college level pitcher is when I knew I could command my pitches better and was able to use velocity to help strikeout hitters deep into counts.
Prep Baseball: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?
Gunnar: Confidence is key to succeed as a pitcher, don’t let other people interfere with your goals. If you want to be somewhere, earn your way there and ask yourself: "how bad do you want it?".
Prep Baseball: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?
Gunnar: My most memorable moment is pitching 5 shutout innings in the 3A state championship to help win the game and bring home Eaton’s 4th consecutive state title.
Prep Baseball: Preview your high school team's season for us. How do you feel your team will be?
Gunnar: I feel that we will be pretty good, we need to help some of our younger guys mature and fill the role of some of the seniors we lost. But I have all of the confidence in them and I believe we can do it.
