Q&A with USC Commit Ethan Carswell

Eliott Wilk
Central Region Operations Director

INF Ethan Carswell (Blue Valley) is a slick-fielding, switch-hitting middle infielder with an innate feel for the barrel, generating easy bat speed from a compact swing that has consistently shown the ability to handle high-end arms over the years. A member of Team Kansas at the 2024 Future Games, Carswell has a chance to be a true top-of-the-order bat at the next level.

We recently had the chance to talk to Carswell about his recruitment process, along with some other fun topics, below.

Our Q&A

Prep Baseball: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?

Ethan: Going into the recruiting process, I was very excited to experience it and be able to talk to coaches. The things I wanted to find while looking for a program was finding a place where I thought I could play as early as possible. I also wanted a great connection with the coaches to find great people. Lastly, I also wanted to be somewhere where it’s warm.

PB: What do you like most about the program you chose, and what were the key factors in making your decision?

E: The things that I liked most about my program was that I loved the coaches. Coach Stankiewicz, our head coach is a great guy and everyone I’ve talked to has said the best. Another great person is our hitting coach, Coach Jewett. He is awesome. He seems to have a great connection with all the players and I can’t wait to work with him.

PB: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?

E: You know some advice I would give is to keep working every day and try to stay away from social. Comparison is a thief of joy and it’s you against the world.

PB: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Where did the school you committed to first see you play?

E: For me, [it] started towards the end of eighth grade during the Junior Future Games. I was able to hop on a couple of calls with some coaches, but then they changed the rules. [It] really started to pick [back] up August of my junior year just after Area Code.

PB: Was there a particular Prep Baseball tournament or showcase that helped accelerate your recruiting process? If yes, how so?

E: Junior Future Games and Future Games was by far some of the best recruiting tournaments I was able to go to. There’s just so many coaches and a great atmosphere to be able to play at.

PB: Who is the next talented young player to keep an eye on out of your high school or travel program?

E: Grant Westphal. Everyone knows Grant. He’s very talented player and he’s gonna be great. But another player that I would say from a high school is Jack Euston. Jack is a very physical infielder, has a lot of power, and can play the corners well.
