We recently had the chance to talk to Robertson about his recruitment process, along with some other fun topics, below.
Our Q&A
Prep Baseball: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?
Warren: I was expecting and hoping for some division 1 looks pretty quickly. I was looking for somewhere that felt like home with guys I can get a long with and love being around for 4 years.
PB: What do you like most about the program you chose, and what were the key factors in making your decision?
W: I love the environment of campus and the coaching staff. Another key factor is the school itself because it’s well known for having strong academics and I know I’ll be set for the future no matter what happens.
PB: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?
W: I’d say trust who you are and when you're in big moments or under pressure just trust yourself and tone everything else out of the equation.
PB: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?
W: Not really but I’m also thankful to know my parents will do their best to come visit and attend games as often as they can.
PB: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Where did the school you committed to first see you play?
W: The recruiting process really started in the beginning of the summer with colleges at just about every one of our games. I believe Notre Dame first saw me at a tournament in Indiana.
PB: Was there a particular Prep Baseball tournament or showcase that helped accelerate your recruiting process? If yes, how so?
W: The Future Games was a great spot to showcase myself with the best players from around the country. It was a great time playing with everyone from my state as well. I saw just about every college you could think of at that event which made it a really unique experience.
PB: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?
W: I had interest and went on visits to Mizzou and Illinios.
PB: Who is the best player you have faced in your state? What about them makes for a tough opponent?
W: Tyler Wood was a great arm for Lee's Summit West last school season. He had a great cutter and had serious velocity while being able to locate.
PB: If you could steal any tool or quality from another player in the state, what would it be and who would it be from?
W: I would take the speed of Zach DeHaas because it’s an awesome tool to have as an outfielder to have that kind of speed.
PB: Who is the next talented young player to keep an eye on out of your high school or travel program?
W: My younger brother will be a freshman at Rockhurst next year. His name’s Graham Robertson and I have high hopes he can be a great player too.
PB: At what point in your career did you realize you were a college-caliber player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?
W: My 13U season and our last year with drop 5 was when I thought I first really stood out. Ever since then I've seen myself as a high caliber player and work to make improvements day by day.
PB: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?
W: Last summer my team won Prep Baseball's National Championship in Lake Point. I thought it was awesome a smaller group of guys all from the KC area were able to compete and win against some of these teams with guys from all over the country. It really showed how great team chemistry and a real will to win can effect outcomes.
PB: Preview your high school team's season for us. How do you feel your team will be?
W: I feel my team has a good chance of being one of the better teams in the state of Missouri. We have 3 guys in my junior class including me who have committed to play at the division one level. We should be able to lead the rest of the guys and win a good amount of games against our difficult schedule.
