Today we release a late summer update to the 2028 class, our third update of the year. This update has the class expanding from the Top 50 to Top 75. With a smaller and younger class, you will generally see more overall movement, but those moves are usually smaller as we keep this class tighter until players have a chance to develop. Below we highlight a few players that our staff had an opportunity to gather evaluations on this summer. These players have seen a tick up in the most recent rankings update.
+ Trent O'Malley - Langley HS - OF/RHP
O'Malley was one of the more impressive freshman that we saw during the high school season, and he did nothing to change that feeling this summer. While he has certainly stood out on the mound, sitting upper 80's and touching an occasional 90-91, it was his offensive production on the varsity level this spring and his continued power production this summer that set him apart from some others. While the frame is fairly filled out and leaves some wondering as to how much physical growth is left in the future, he is still one of the youngest players in this 2028 VA/DC class. With him being this young and having a solid combination of polish and some projection left to his game, this move up to #2 was well needed and deserved.
+ Tyler Howard - Spotswood HS - RHP
For our staff, Howard may be the most intriguing arm in this class as this time. The long and rangy right hander is extremely young for the class (will not be 18 until after he gets on a college campus), has young features, plenty of room to grow into the frame, and an easy operation that just works. Clean arm swing, gets to his velo with ease, has two above average secondary pitches for the class, and pitches. Howard bursted onto the scene this spring for state champion Spotswood where he threw a number of big innings, including a five inning outing in the state championship game where he gave up one run and got the win. The 6-foot-3 right hander is a strike thrower with significant upside to go along with his present abilities.
+ Jack Guerin - St. Alban's - RHP/SS
Early last spring was our first look at the DC area two-way talent. The first place that Guerin stood out was at shortstop. Moved with some fluidity, hands worked, and just seemed to have an advanced feel for the pace of the game, especially as an infielder. As the spring progressed our staff was able to get a few more looks, and he continued to make advancements, including on the mound. While the positional still carries some weight for Guerin, the arm took over the profile a little bit for us this summer. Longer frame with some room to fill. Medium length on the arm path, works from a three quarter slot, and above average arm speed. Guerin works mostly in the 84-87 range and will run it up to 88 mph when needed. Has shown a quality changeup and the spin is still developing (speed and shape), but has shown some feel for the zone. Has a chance to be a frontline arm for St. Alban's this spring.
+ Ethan Foster - Wise Central - 2B
A little dinged up on the back end of the summer, but that did not slow the deep southwest Virginia hitter down. Foster continues to shine at the plate. Above average bat to ball, aggressive hitter, but shows some feel for the strike zone and takes what is given. Smaller hand load, medium length to the path, and does a nice job of matching planes. Of all of those qualities, it is probably his willingness to use the whole field and hit it where it is pitched that stands out the most. There is some average power that comes into play, and while there is certainly a chance for more down the road, it is hit over power right now. Once he gets fully healthy going into next spring/summer, Foster could really make a name for himself as one of the best left handed hitters in the Mid-Atlantic region.
+ Brody Beasley - Atlantic Shores - SS
During the high school season our staff got out to see Beasley and his teammates a handful of times. The one thing that was consistent with the 6-foot-3 shortstop is that he more than held his own on the defensive side. Long and rangy frame and is an above average mover for his age and size. Beasley moves well side to side, can throw from multiple slots, and has above average arm strength for his class. He is a well above average defender for the class. Versus the arms that we saw him against in the spring, he was overmatched at times, but seemed much more comfortable in the box this summer and his post-spring production matched his demeanor in the box. The biggest steps that we see as what is next for the 757 infielder is the offensive uptick needs to continue into the spring versus varsity level arms and the continued progression in true footspeed.
