On Sunday August 10th, the Virginia Vols hosted our staff for a scout day at Benedictine College Prep in Henrico, VA. This scout day had sixty-one players from the surrounding central Virginia areas. Today we take a look at a handful of players that were the standouts from the event.

Scout Day Standouts: Virginia Vols

Christian Bass OF / 3B / Cosby High, VA / 2027

At the plate there was some hand and bat speed in the swing. Pull side tendency and has some strength to pull. Showed best on the mound. Was low 80's with the fastball and had the best extension of the event, averaging over 6-feet of extension at release. He works from a high three quarter slot and uses that for his bigger 12/6 breaking ball. Had the highest average spin RPM on his curveball. In addition to the depth, Bass averaged more than 16" of horizontal movement on the breaking ball.

Jackson Bates OF / 3B / HANOVER HIGH, VA / 2027

Bates continues to add strength and athleticism to the frame. Listed at 6-foot, 180-pounds, there is lean strength present in the frame. Ran a 7.01 60 and displayed some feel for the barrel at the plate. Toe tap load to stride, hands load to slightly vertical barrel, and delivers a level path through the zone. Worked best from gap to gap. Controlled intent to the swing.

James Carney OF / RHP / St Christophers, VA / 2028

The long and projectable 6-foot-4 frame with plenty of room to fill. An interesting arm to watch as he matures. Long and thin, medium length to the arm swing, three-quarter slot, and had one of the best fastball spin scores of the group. The fastball worked well to the glove side and while it is a higher spin offering (<2433 RPM), it shapes more as a sinker. The breaking ball is a slurvy curveball that has more horizontal to it and some depth as well. Was one of the higher upside arms of the day.

Jayden(JD) Dillane SS / RHP / Atlee, VA / 2027

Effort and intent. Dillane is a higher effort guy that seems to do everything full tilt. 7.02 runner, showed some arm strength in the infield and on the mound, as well as some strength at the plate. Second best max distance and third best average distance during BP. Upright and medium lift during the load. Lands on time and delivers some above average bat speed through the zone. Impact came from pull side gap to the line. On the mound there is above average arm speed and probably more controlled intent than at the plate. Quick arm that generates a low-mid 80's fastball that sat 82-85 and touched 86 on the mound. Some lift on a fastball from a lower release that got nearly 20" IVB. Some depth to both breaking balls, both showcasing average feel for the zone.

Dylan Eberts 3B / RHP / Powhatan High, VA / 2028

Longer 6-foot-1 frame. On the mound Eberts has a normal effort delivery, gets down and out to stride, and has a longer arm swing. Three-quarter arm slot and gets out front with some extension. Pounded the zone with the 79-82 mph fastball, landing it at an 80% clip during the bullpen session. Similar strike percentage with the mid 60's curveball, but could stand to maintain arm speed on the pitch.

Bryce Ellis RHP / 2B / Hanover High, VA / 2027

Durable 5-foot-10, 185-pound frame that is fairly filled out. Works from the stretch and gives more of a short, back-end reliever feel. Lower slot right hander with more of a sinker shape at 78-80 mph. Landed a low 70's slider that tended to backup out of the hand. Lands closed down the mound, creating some of the sink on the fastball, but could also play into the slider backing up and making it tougher to get it out front.

Christian Mulroe C / RHP / Mills Godwin, VA / 2028

Wider setup at the plate with a short, flatter path through the zone. Line drives and doubles power to pull. Showed some improvement in the run tool, running a 7.12 60. Best pop time and best arm strength of the day for the catching group and flashes some hand strength receiving. On the mound, the catchers arm actions transfers there as well. Shorter arm action working in the low 80's with a fastball that landed at more than 70% in the zone.

Jackson Ross 1B / 3B / Glen Allen High, VA / 2028

Strength to the 6-foot corner infielder. Second best exit velo at 93.2 mph and the best average max distance at 261 feet. Gets it going forward in the swing and tends to get over the front side. Creates some lift and works more in the air, looking for impact and some run production in the swing. Strong frame that should continue to add strength as he matures. Potential middle of the order bat.

Carter Sisk OF / RHP / Varina High School, VA / 2027

Was one of the last few arms to throw on the day, but certainly had the makings of the most electric. Compact frame, longer arm path, and sort of posts up on the back side. Really builds up arm speed through release and maintains it on secondary pitches, showing the best breaking ball of the day with his slider. Quick worker and moves with intent. The fastball was 83-86 mph (86.4 top). With some pitch shaping and refinement on the fastball efficiency, could be a fastball with some higher end lift. Slider had around -8" IVB and 8" HM. While it was on the lower spin side, the look and feel of it showed well and has some future upside.
