This summer, the best uncommitted Class of 2027 prospects will head to LakePoint Sports in Emerson, GA for the premier Prep Baseball Report Future Games. For the first time ever, the state of California will be bringing two teams: Team NorCal and Team SoCal. For the next three weeks leading up to the event we will be previewing each player that will be putting their talents on display in front of a plethora of college coaches from across the entire country.
Standing 6-foot-0, Sam Clapp is an RHP/OF talent from Newport Harbor High School.
Clapp had a strong season for Newport Harbor High, fanning 30 batters across 26 innings.
At the Future Games Tryout in Fullerton, Clapp’s talents on the mound were on full display, earning him the rank as best pitching prospect of the event.
Clapp’s 88.6 MPH fastball was the hardest thrown heater on the day, and gave batters trouble in the live hitting portion of the event.
The righty faced five batters and struck out three of them, only allowing one hit in the process.
Clapp pairs the fastball with a strong slider that has an average spin rate of 1814 RPM.
Alongside the heater and the slider, Clapp features a 79 MPH change-up that rounds out the righty’s three-pitch mix.
Clapp also shows promise when not on the mound, covering solid ground in the outfield and showing strong pop at the plate.
Clapp is most definitely a player to watch for at LakePoint. His strong heater paired with crafty slider and change-up will make for a fun watch when he takes the mound at LakePoint.
"A late season call-up to the varsity on what was a loaded varsity rotation for Newport Harbor, Clapp pitched only one varsity inning after dominating on the lower levels for the Sailors. Despite that lack of varsity experience, Clapp came out to the Future Games tryout and dominated during his outing. With a true three-pitch mix, Clapp registered strikeouts with the fastball, changeup, and the slider. Sniffing 90 mph on the fastball, Clapp’s ability to hit his spots made for uncomfortable at-bats for hitters. Flashing significant arm side run on the FB, he pairs it very well with a wipeout slider that falls off the table to righties while being able to induce whiffs to lefties. His changeup is a nice change of pace pitch currently but flashes big potential at times."- Les Lukach, State Director
