MISSISSIPPI QUICK HITS 📝

Seth Welch OF / 1B / Hamilton, MS / 2028

The speedy outfielder from Hamilton had a solid weekend in Atlanta that included a 6.44 60 which placed him 2nd in the entire event. Welch used that speed to deliver a triple during gameplay after driving a pitch into the left center field gap. Smaller in stature at 5-7, 150 pounds, but plays the game big. Welch has some pop at the plate with exit velocities into the low 90’s but his game will revolve around his legs which are elite. He’s a catalyst on offense and should begin to create a following among college recruiters.

Axton Westmoreland OF / LHP / Hernando, MS / 2028

Mississippi’s #1 ranked prospect in the 2028 class looked the part at Lakepoint this past weekend and has taken a step forward offensively. The 6-0, 172 pound lefty from Hernando has plenty of upside on the mound but what we are seeing from him at the plate is special. His swing is synced up and gaining more pop while also having the ability to drive the baseball to all fields. On the mound, he doesn’t throw anything straight and has shown very advanced action on a 3 pitch mix that includes his running fastball, curveball, and change up. We also expect another velocity jump soon which could move him to another level on the bump.

Braylon Edwards SS / Madison Central, MS / 2028

Edwards made a statement in Atlanta as he showed everyone what switch hitting should look like. The 5-9, 180 pound infielder from Madison Central was very similar on both sides of the plate and with his speed (6.88 and getting faster) should prove to be a thorn in the side of opposing pitchers. Up to 98 mph exit velocity already Edwards got his hands inside a fastball on the inner half in game action and nearly drove it out of the park but settled with a run-scoring double. He’s sure handed on the infield as well with accuracy on his throws with a strong arm up to 85 mph across the diamond.

Jaxon Herod SS / 3B / West Union Attendance Center, MS / 2028

The athletic infielder was an integral piece to a West Union team that won the 1A State Championship this past spring and he’s just getting started. Herod, a 6-1, 175 pound left handed hitter, found the barrel multiple times in Atlanta including a solo homer to right field that got out in a hurry. He has a sweet swing with a mostly pull side approach and even more developing power. The tools don’t stop at the plate as he also runs well at 6.78 in the 60 and has one of the stronger arms in the class that produces throws across the diamond up to 93 mph.

Jaylen Lee OF / 1B / Petal, MS / 2028

We got an extended look at the tall, athletic Lee in Atlanta and he did not disappoint! At the plate he uses the leverage his 6-3, 180 pound frame gives him to produce multiple line drives with exit velocities up to 96 mph and rising. Lee has plenty of development in front of him but what could be is very exciting. He runs well also as he turned in a 6.75 60 at the event and we expect that to get quicker as well. The next calendar year could take this young up and comer to another level as the recruiters begin to get familiar with the 2028 class.

Parker Israel 3B / RHP / Hernando, MS / 2028

Israel has progressively gotten better in all areas since we first saw him at a Rising Star event in North Mississippi in the spring of 2024. On Saturday he had a coming out party on the mound delivering 3 quality innings with a heavy fastball that topped out at 89 mph while holding 86-88 over the entire outing. He’s still developing more command of his breaking ball and change up but both pitches have good shape and will help him moving forward. At 6-1, 215 pounds, Israel is well put together and with overall added strength his velocity should continue to rise and it will be no surprise to see him working easily in the low 90s at some point on the horizon.

Ty Latham OF / RHP / Hartfield Academy, MS / 2028

Latham is another arm in the 2028 class that will benefit greatly with simply overall body maturity and growth. His delivery is synced up and fairly repeatable and he understands what his job is on the mound. At 6-1, 175 pounds he definitely has some room for added mass that will increase his fastball velocity which is already up to 86 mph. He shows good shape with his breaking ball and can kill the spin (1500) on a changeup that could be a huge pitch in his arsenal.

Case Simmons OF / OF / Brookhaven Academy, MS / 2028

Simmons is one of the more intriguing players in the 2028 class and continues to impress our staff with his performance each time we see him. We saw him for the first time this summer at an ID event and were immediately interested and could see the developing tools. This past weekend we got a chance to see if the tools transferred and they absolutely did. Simmons will get faster (7.11 60) and his arm will get better (79 OF) but his instincts on the field can be seen if you know what you’re looking for. He gets good jumps in the outfield, puts together good at bats, and carries himself in a professional way. We are looking forward to seeing his continued development play out.
