Midwest Super Sophomore Games: Team Indiana Preview

Cooper Trinkle
Scouting Director

An uber-talented crop of 2028s will represent Indiana at the Midwest Super Sophomore Games this weekend, August 1st-3rd, at Ohio State University. The Hoosier State natives are set to square off against the top to-be sophomores from Illinois, Canada, Ohio, and Michigan in a 4-game round robin with the showcase workout set for Friday afternoon. Find a quick preview on the Indiana natives below...

Position Players

+ This position player room features some of our most highly-touted prospects to date in this group, beginning with the #1 ranked player - SS/3B Dylan Murphy (North Posey). Murphy shined throughout our summer coverage, showcasing a premier hit/power profile that rivals any bat in the Midwest's 2028 class. Not just a bat, Murphy also brings sub-6.8 foot speed while showing promising development trends as a defender this summer.

+ The outfielders on this team have a chance to show as one of the deepest outfield groups in the Midwest this weekend. Our top 4 ranked OF's in the 2028 class are set to represent Indiana this weekend in : Canyon Koonce (Brownsburg), Mason Biernacki (Penn), Hayden Zellers (Greenfield-Central), and Andrew Noble (Westfield). Koonce is a highly-impactful, left-handed speedster currently ranked highest amongst the group. Koonce pairs 6.5 speed with the elite contact skills that helped him hit over .400 in one of the state's toughest conferences this spring. Biernacki brings the classes' loudest toolset - a 6.6 runner with a 92 mph OF arm and already 98+ exits recorded. His skills are just as loud, one of my favorite pure hitters in the class, and all the measurable attributes are lifted higher by the quiet intensity that he brings from a makeup perspective. Zellers and Noble round out this group & are highly-touted in their own regards. Zellers owns one of the sweetest swings in the class and he showed it in abundance this summer, a 6.8 runner that showed budding impacts on the circuit. Noble is coming off a standout summer of his own, swinging a hot bat that received raving reviews from our Georgia staff at the 15u National Championships. Noble also brings a recorded 6.5 60 to Ohio State, fitting right in with the speedsters we will have roaming the outfield on this group.

+ The catching crop Team Indiana will boast features C Cooper Nichols (FW Carroll) and C/3B/P Spencer Schiff (Evansville Mater Dei). Nichols was a big breakout performer on the circuit this summer, looking the part of a high-end backstop with a physical, 6-foot-3 frame. There is standout bat strength/speed here with a sure-handed nature behind the plate that will impact this group on both sides of the ball. Schiff is a talent we've followed for quite a while. He is a proven bat that produced double-digit doubles this spring for state finalist Mater Dei, and showed much of the same on the circuit this summer. He will impact this group offensively, as well as doubling time at C/3B, and will also get the ball to close on the mound on Day 2.

+ Three more primary infielders are set to represent Indiana on the dirt in : SS Brody McGaha (Mooresville), SS Donovan Craig (Munster), and SS Callum Birdzell (Cathedral). McGaha and Craig led all 4A freshman in hitting last spring, two gamer-type left-handed bats that bring sure-handed gloves to the dirt. Birdzell shined throughout the summer, turning in a 6.8 60-time at Scout Day before hitting each time I got eyes on him in the summer. Birdzell's projectable, athletic, 6-foot-3 frame is one to really dream on and these three infielders will pair well with Murphy and a couple of two-way performers to bring real talent to the dirt.

+ SS/P Billy Miller (Kouts) will highlight the true two-way performers after he turned in an All-State freshman campaign while leading Kouts to a 1A state finals appearance. His 90 mph fastball will be featured on Day 2 vs Ohio, but he will also double as one of the top shortstops on the team with a skillful look there. RHP/SS Matthew Kulig (Andrean) and RHP/SS Drew Morgan are two primary arms in our mind that will also see time on the dirt and at the plate. RHP/1B Bishop Moore (Beech Grove) fits that mold too, a high-ceiling right-handed pitcher that will show at 1B for at least part of the weekend. This group is rounded out by RHP/ATH Braylon Storey (Center Grove). Storey is one of the more interesting athletes in the group, a 6.7 runner with 95+ exits that also has been up to 88 on the bump on multiple occasions. Storey will close on the mound on Day 1 & 3, and when not pitching will see time in both the infield and outfield.

Pitching Staff

Game 1 versus Illinois

+ This pitching staff is deep, with (5) of the arms already reaching 88 or better in front of our staff, and all arms set to throw eclipsing 85 mph in front of our staff in our identification process. It starts with the #1 ranked arm in the class, Cole Breeden (Evansville Mater Dei), who will get the ball versus Illinois to start. The 6-foot-5, projectable, athletic right-hander has shown as one of the most-advanced arms I've seen at the age, boasting a fastball up to 88 mph this spring to pair with a 3-pitch mix for strikes.

+ Finn Steiner (University) will follow Breeden in G1, a highly-projectable right-hander in his own regard with a 6-foot-3 frame and quality FB/CB combo. Ty Pohl (Evansville North) enters as the top ranked southpaw in the class and will have the ball to finish G1. The 6-foot-3, sturdy-framed southpaw looks the part of a future star with a three-pitch mix that includes a mid-80s fastball, and an advanced changeup that tunnels well of a firm-for-class fastball.

Game 2 versus Canada

+ Another highly-touted southpaw will take the ball to start G2 in Luke Hensley (Danville). Hensley will toe it at 6-foot-5, 185 pounds and left a lasting impression in my look this summer, where he showed flashes of a premier left-handed starters' look with a 3-pitch arsenal and clean movement patterns. Two strike-throwing right-handers who were up to 85 in our identification process will take the mound next in Mark Haynes (Wawasee) and Darret Branson (Evansville Mater Dei). Haynes, a physical-framed, 6-foot-2, 195 pounder will show more a east/west, sinker/slider type arsenal, while Branson will attack with a more north/south look, riding the fastball to pair with a top-down curveball. Storey will take the ball to close this one with his highly-athletic look and power stuff (up to 88).

Game 3 versus Ohio

+ Billy Miller will get the start for G3, a top 5 player in the class mentioned above for his prowess at shortstop. He is a consistent strike-thrower with fastball velocities already peaking at 90 mph, and he compliments an advanced heater with present feel for spin. He will hand the ball off to Drew Morgan (Mt. Vernon) another two-way performer. Morgan is more of a P-first from our evaluations to date, a highly-upside, lean, 6-foot-4 athlete that holds one of the more-comfortable SP tabs of the group. He is a strike-thrower with a heater up to 87 already, and his firm, upper-70s slider looks the part of a future swing-and-miss type pitch.

+ Our next arm will enter with some real sizzle behind his fastball in Bishop Moore (Beech Grove). Moore is a 6-foot-7, 3-sport standout that polished nicely this summer. The arm really works, and produces a fastball up to 89 mph with two secondary offerings that flash above average. There is a real shot Moore develops into one of the hardest throwing arms in this class and his outing will be a must-see. Schiff will get the ball to close this one, taking a break from two-way duties. His highest-ceiling position is still TBD, but he'll bring a mid-80s FB to the mound to pair with one of the more advanced breaking balls on staff.

Game 4 versus Michigan

+ Bodhi Pulley (Bloomington North) will get the start for Team Indiana on the final day. Pulley is a future-physical, 6-foot-2 righty with THE best aptitude for spin on staff. His fastball plays with heavy arm-side life and touched 88 this summer, but the upper-70s slider will be the pitch to watch here. It spins north of 2800 with real late-biting break and is likely to aquire whiffs-in-bunches during his stint for Team Indiana. An undersized, athletic right-hander will follow in Gavin McGee (Roncalli). McGee moves with a dynamic look to pair with a full-circle arm action, and will look to showcase three above average offerings that are highlighted by a fastball up to 87 and a high-spin breaking ball. Matthew Kulig will follow, a 6-foot-1 right-hander with a heater up to 85 and a well-spun breaking ball that he can manipulate. He is another with his future position TBD, entering as a true TWP in our minds. Braylon Storey will come back for his second (1) inning stint of the weekend in this one, looking to cap the weekend with a save versus Team Michigan.
