Southeast Super Sophomore Games: Alabama Quick Hits, Catchers

Prep Baseball Alabama Staff

EMERSON, GA – The inaugural Southeast Super Sophomore Games took place August 2-3 at the renowned LakePoint Sports Complex, bringing together over 230 of the top uncommitted 2028 prospects from across the Deep South.

Alabama standouts made the most of the stage, turning in strong showings during both the workout portion and a pair of highly competitive games.

In this breakdown, we highlight some of the standout performances from Alabama catchers who impressed against high-level competition. Stay tuned in the coming days as we continue our positional coverage of Alabama prospects from the event.

+ C Jamison Barnes (Briarwood Christian, 2028) continues to further cement himself as the top catcher in the class. Possessing an impressive 5-foot-11, 181-pound build, Barnes shows off some quality strength already in the stature, but with plenty of room to add down the road. Also surprisingly athletic for a catcher, the right-hander consistently took quality at-bats in gameplay during the event, capped off by a pull-side double and a home run to LCF. There’s some present strength in the barrel that stays through the zone well in the swing, and projects to hit for more power and slug more as he continues to develop. Above-average defender at catcher with pops ranging 2.06-2.19 and a C velocity of 76 mph. Showed well in gameplay defensively with quality blocking and receiving skills. QB background and also ran a 7.05 60-yard dash during the workout.

+ C Mack Keaton (UMS-Wright Prep, 2028) emerged as a clear-cut standout in terms of Alabama catchers in attendance, as the rising sophomore exceled in multiple facts during his first Prep Baseball event. A physical 5-foot-10, 195-pounder with room to fill out the frame, Keaton has the skills to pair the physicality with and showed them throughout the weekend. Possessing a controlled load and a compact swing, the right-hander has some pull-side impact ability in the profile with a top EV of 93.2 mph during the workout. He also showed the ability to use the whole field in the swing, as he recorded a single to RF driving an outer-half pitch the opposite way in the at-bat. The defensive skills consistently stood out during the event, as he has clean, polished actions behind the plate and handled all arms well throughout the week. Posted 2.11-2.19 pop times and a 73 mph C velocity, both of which will only continue to improve down the road.

+ C Barrett McKelvey (Hartselle, 2028) enjoyed a quality showing on both sides of the plate this past weekend and continues to get better with each look. A lean 5-foot-11, 160-pounder with room to grow, McKelvey showcased a line-drive approach from the right side of the plate while showing the ability to consistently drive hard contact to all parts of the field during his round of BP. Possesses good rhythm to the operation while using a simple load for the trigger. Impressive catch-and-throw skills ranked at the top of the Alabama backstops in attendance, posting 1.85-2.00 pop times and peaking at a 77 mph C velocity. Also worked up to 83.7 mph on the mound, showcasing the intriguing two-way traits down the road.
