Team Select Game One Recap

Team Select fell 10-5 to a tough South Carolina squad to open things up here at the Future Games in Emerson, Georgia.

Despite the loss, there were still plenty of bright spots for the Select boys as they started the scoring in the top of the third inning. C/OF Luke McAtee (MO, De Smet Jesuit, 2027) led the inning off with a loud double, later coming around to score on a passed ball to make it 4-1 at the time.

They would add on one more in the inning thanks to a single from C/1B Xander D’Onofrio (NY, Briarcliff, 2027), plating 1B Quinn Rooney (IL, Benet, 2027) who reached via a fielder’s choice, making it 4-2.

The scoring would come to a halt until the top of the sixth where they were able to plate two more. OF/1B Colton Manning (PA, Great Valley, 2027) led the inning off with a single and would later score on a fielder’s choice from INF Jake Lopez (OK, Broken Arrow, 2027) to make it 8-3. Rooney would follow quickly with an RBI single to plate McAtee who also singled in the frame, bringing it to 8-4.

The final run would come across in the top of the eighth inning to make it 8-5 at the time. OF Shake Speckert (MO, Francis Howell, 2027) came around to score on an error from the catcher, and he reached base via a walk a couple plays before.

We had five arms throw in game one, starting with RHP Braylen Brown (IL, Staunton, 2027). The 6-foot-2, 195-pound right-hander worked with a two-pitch mix, running his fastball up to 89 mph with around 2500-2600 pm, sitting in the 87-88 mph range. He also went to a sharp slider in the low-70s with 2500-2700 rpm.

Following Brown was RHP Graydon Leonard (IL, Gibson City-Melvin Sibley, 2027), who worked in the mid-80s with the fastball from a loose and easy delivery. He also looked to have a curveball in the low-70s and upper-70s changeup with some arm-side run.

RHP Liam Nash (IL, Huntley, 2027) was the third arm to throw, and he impressed with a fastball up to 91 mph, sitting in the 88-90 mph range while also showing a mid-70s breaking ball.

One of the louder looks on the bump for Select was from RHP Rowan Walker (PA, State College, 2027) - boasting a fastball up to 91 mph to pair with a sinker and slider, working the outer-part of the zone consistently.

The final arm to go for Select was RHP Matthew Bell (MO, Valley Park, 2027) - who featured a mid-80s fastball that topped at 87 mph to go along with a low-60s curveball.
