2019 Future Games Day 1 - Team CA Notebook

CARTERSVILLE, GA. - The Prep Baseball Report Future Games action kicked off on Wednesday with a workout by position for all players in attendance. Game action began on Thursday with Team California squaring off against Team Arizona at the LakePoint sports complex. Team Arizona came away with the 6-1 victory. 

Right handed pitcher Gunnar Mansfield of Orange Lutheran HS (Orange, Ca.) got the start in Game 1 for Team California. The rising junior overcame a difficult start in the first with a strong second and third innings to keep Team California in the game. 

There were few offensive bright spots for Team California but one of them was 2021 3B Patrick Kieghran of Serra HS (San Mateo, Ca.). Kieghran, a big, strong 6-foot-1, 190-pounds, drilled a ball in his first at-bat that resulted in a long out. In his second at-bat he took a 2-1 fastball and drove it into right-center field for a ground rule double.

Rising sophomore catcher, Ryan Edwards of Chico HS (Chico, Ca.), stood out both at the plate and behind it. After striking out to end a nine-pitch at-bat, Edwards took to catching showing soft hands and an uncanny ability to stick it on difficult pitches. He blocks very well with agility and athleticism - even blocked one with his mask. Caught a would-be base stealer with a 2.01 pop time that beat the runner by half a step. In the bottom of the sixth the bat showed itself with a laser shot to right-center field for a base hit that helped ignite a rally. 

Evan Yates of King HS (Riverside, Ca.) showed off his hit tool with a hard hit ball to right-center field in the second inning. The rising junior has a long, lean wiry strong frame that projects very well with added strength. 

Team California takes on Team Arizona on Friday at 12:15 PM EST on Field 13 at the LakePoint Sports Complex.
