Starting on July 30th, the Prep Baseball California team hosted the California State Games at Fullerton College and High School in Fullerton, Cal. This was an invite-only event for high school classes (2026-2029), and gave our staff an ample look at the state's top prospects.

Today, we will continue the release of the scouting reports from the event, now with the 2028 outfielders:

2028 OUTFIELDER ANALYSIS

1. Mason Smith, Palm Desert (CA), 2028
Positional Profile: OF/2B CF who displays good feel for the barrel and sound defensive profile
Body: 5-8, 135-pounds. Lean, athletic frame with plenty of room for further physical development.
Hit: RHH. Sets up upright and balanced with hands at ear level, a raised back elbow, and an active lower half. Shows a subtle barrel waggle before initiating the load by sitting into the back knee as the hands work back. Utilizes a small leg kick with a toe-tap trigger for timing, followed by an aggressive yet controlled stride forward. Turns hips at foot strike to create good separation, with hands quick through the zone and extending well out front. Works on an uphill path while staying on top of the ball, producing loud contact with a consistent line-drive approach. Shows gap-to-gap power with a high two-handed finish. 68.6 mph bat speed with 9g of rotational acceleration.
Power: 98 mph max exit velocity (88.7 avg.); 352-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. OF - 86 mph. Compact arm path working from a high 3/4 slot. Aggressive arm action generates good carry on throws. Shows decent feel for accuracy, though natural cut is present at times.
Defense: Takes good routes with strong reads off the bat. Works with short, quick, and efficient footwork, consistently positioning himself behind the ball and staying in line with the bag. Shows the range and instincts to stick in CF.
Athletic Testing: 6.86 runner in the 60-yard dash; 22.10-inch max vertical jump.
