PBR Future Games: Game 3 Recap
August 4, 2020
LakePoint Sports Complex was the place to be for all uncommitted 2022's and 2023's over the past few days as many players saw their stocks rise in front of college coaches. Each player went through a pro-style workout on Saturday then competed against other PBR states from all over the country for three games. Team Alabama split their first two games on Day 1 of games against PBR Texas and PBR Mississippi. On the final day of the PBR Future Games, Team Alabama dropped their last game to PBR Louisiana in an offensive battle over seven innings.
Over the next few days, the PBR Alabama staff will continue to release post-event content on all players who wore Alabama across their chest. For today, let's go back and look at some of the players who stood out in Game 3 of the PBR Future Games vs. PBR Louisiana.
Game 3
+ Starting things off offensively, '22 C Walker Zapp (Auburn) made some loud contact over the past few days but didn't have much to show for on the stat sheet. Hitting from the right-side, Zapp hits in a crouched stance and really uses his hips well throughout his swing. In his 1st AB, he hit one on the screws right at the well-positioned shortstop for a L6. Zapp stood out defensively, as he showed very quick transfers behind the plate and a very strong arm on throws to 2nd base. 1.86-1.94 pop times during the workout on Saturday.
‘22 C Walker Zapp (@WalkerZapp; @AuburnHighBSB) has put together some nice swings so far but hasn’t had much to show for. Lines out to the SS here in his 1st AB. Great catch & throw skills behind the plate. 1.86-1.94 pops. #PBRFutureGames pic.twitter.com/7eajtVDHa3

+ '22 3B/RHP Davis Gillespie (Oak Mountain) put together a very solid week at the PBR Future Games at the plate. He swung the bat very well and picked up multiple hits during gameplay against some elite arms. Really stood out in Game 3, as he turned on an inside fastball during his 1st AB and lined it down the line for a single in the 2nd inning. Tried to stretch it into a double, but was called out on a fairly close play at 2nd base.
A lot to like from the overall performance ‘22 3B/RHP Davis Gillespie (@gillespie_davis; @OMHS_Baseball) has turned in this week. Consistent with the bat that is starting to pick up some interest. Singles to the pull side here.#PBRFutureGames pic.twitter.com/sK2Qs69boc

+ In his 2nd AB of Game 3, Gillespie continued his hot streak at the dish, as he sat back on a breaking ball and roped it into the backside gap and scored the runner from 1st for a RBI triple. Showed some premium barrel awareness all week with some hard-hit balls. Very good instincts and really understands the game. Doubles as an elite arm in the '22 class that has been up to 90 mph at prior events but did not throw at the event. One of the better performances on the week for Team Alabama.
After the Turner single, ‘22 3B/RHP Davis Gillespie (@gillespie_davis; @OMHS_Baseball) scores him from 1st on this RBI triple. Sat back on a hanging breaking ball and roped it to the RCF gap. Really has put together a solid performance this week.#PBRFutureGames pic.twitter.com/yBzDseHXDa

+ Looking back at the 2020 PBR Future Games, '22 MIF Zane Stokes (Mobile Christian) was one that really saw his stock his rise for Team Alabama. Recorded multiple hits at the dish through three games and was very reliable with sure hands up the middle defensively. Very mature approach at the dish with consistent line drives up the middle and to the backside gap during BP and gameplay. Love the overall body of work Stokes turned in this week.
A sleeper on #TeamAlabama that has showed well at the #PBRFutureGames is ‘22 MIF Zane Stokes (@Sto1Stokes; @MobileChristian). Turned in some quality AB’s and singles up the middle here in the 4th. Steals 2nd a few pitches later and scores on a heads up play on an E3. pic.twitter.com/UbbYxQ19MK

+ '22 3B McGwire Turner (Helena) had some hard-hit balls during BP and gameplay to the pullside for Team Alabama. After doubling in Game 2 of the PBR Future Games, Turner continued in Game 3 with a single thru the 6-hole for a single in his 2nd AB. Looking to his pullside, Turner showed some impressive strength in the box.
‘22 3B McGwire Turner (@MacPTurner; @HelenaHuskiesBB) gets us going after the lightning delay with this hard-hit single thru the 6-hole off an 85 mph fastball. #PBRFutureGames pic.twitter.com/K4RE2mJvT3

+ '22 1B JW Hopkins (Bob Jones) really projects as that middle-of-the-order power 1st baseman in a lineup. During BP on Saturday, Hopkins hit at least six balls out to his pullside and posted a 98 mph exit velo and max distance of 394 feet. Put together some quality swings during gameplay, including this loud L7 during Game 3 yesterday.
‘22 1B JW Hopkins (@JWhopkins6; @BJHSBaseball) laces a 2-strikes pitch right at the right fielder for a loud L7. Power is present with more to come in future. Treated BP like HR Derby during the workout on Saturday & recorded a 98 mph exit velo via @TrackManBB.#PBRFutureGames pic.twitter.com/9LQSvSWFP6

+ '22 C/RHP Tucker Stockman (Athens) really made some strong closing remarks at the PBR Future Games yesterday. On the mound Stockman ran his fastball up to 89 mph while sitting primarily 85-87 mph with sink and run to the arm side. Breaking ball showed 11/5 action and was landed for strikes. Changeup was effective to LHH's, especially in his second inning of work, that got numerous swings and misses. Tunneled well off the fastball. Flashed a few cutters vs. RHH's at 82-84 mph with some late dart at the end. Pitches out of a 3/4 arm slot and generates a lot of run with a quick arm action.
Known primarily for the stick, ‘22 C/RHP Tucker Stockman (@StockmanTucker; @AHSBASEBALL_1) throws up a zero in the 5th, working 86-89 mph w/ sink. Commanded the breaking ball @ 72-73 & flashed a cutter w/ late dart @ 82-84. Quick arm action out of a 3/4 slot. #PBRFutureGames pic.twitter.com/S2LCtfVv8p

+ After showing well on the mound, Stockman laced a double to the RCF gap off a fastball in his last AB of the PBR Future Games. Fouled off a few fastballs in the process, then got one over the middle of the plate and didn't miss it. Strong, physical 6-foot-2, 220 pound frame. Has the chance to stay as a 2-way guy down the road.
Some pretty strong closing remarks from ‘22 C/RHP Tucker Stockman (@StockmanTucker; @AHSBASEBALL_1) at the #PBRFutureGames. Strong, physical 6-foot-2, 220 pound build. Worked up to 89 mph on the mound, then laces a double to the backside gap with the stick in the bottom half. pic.twitter.com/oT6GC69D0R
