Preseason All-State: Top Overall Prospects

Illinois Scouting Staff

Our breakdown of the 2018 Preseason All-State event concludes today with a top-ten ranking of the day’s best prospects. You’ll notice half of the group is made up of RHPs. That group in particular burst out and a number of those arms should climb up the updated 2019 rankings, which are set for release soon. But they weren’t the only ones who made the type of offseason gains that caught our eye.

Here, without further ado, is the top-ten list from the February 11 event.

TOP OVERALL PROSPECTS

Griffin Holderfield RHP / Oak Park-River Forest, IL / 2019

Creighton commit. 6-foot-3, 215-pound right-handed pitcher, thick physical build, strong lower half. Drop and drive delivery, really gets into lower half, lands square, and works online, some effort. Arm action is short and loose, plus arm strength for age, ¾ slot. Fastball runs to arm side, virtually sat 92 mph, 89-90 once, plus fastball for age. Slider is hard and sharp, fastball arm speed, 79-82 mph, 10/4 shape, plus potential. Changeup runs hard to arm side, fastball arm speed, 83-86 mph. Electric session, continued outings like this could move his name into draft discussions.
