Prep Baseball Illinois Pitcher of the Week: Ryan Schaffnit

By: Peter Hamot
Assistant Scouting Director, Illinois & Wisconsin

RHP Ryan Schaffnit (Morton, 2025; Bradley commit) is one of the top arms in the illinois senior class, and he got his season started out on the right foot. The big right-hander put together two quality performances this past week to combine for nine innings pitched with no runs allowed, just five hits, and 13 strikeouts to not a single walk - good enough to earn him our first ‘Pitcher of the Week’ honors of the spring.

His first outing game against Normal West, going the first two innings of the game while scattering two hits and four strikeouts.

The bulk of his week came in his outing Thursday in a narrow 1-0 victory over Briarcrest Christian - firing seven innings with just three hits and striking out nine.

A Bradley commit, Schaffnit has frontline stuff that will look to help lead the Potters throughout the spring as the horse of their rotation. He has a durable starter’s build, listed at 6-foot-6, 213-pounds with still more room to add strength. His fastball velocity will catch your eye at 90 mph, but so will his ability to fill up the zone, repeating his delivery impressively well for his size to pour in strikes with an easy and projectable arm action. He will also go to a short bullet slider and running changeup to mix up the pace.

Scouting Report

8/21/24

RHP Ryan Schaffnit (Morton; Bradley commit) opened some eyes in his two inning stint. He takes the mound at a physically imposing 6-foot-6, 213-pounds and moves well for his size, showing little perceived effort with the ability to repeat his operation. His arm works short in the back before firing through with a higher ¾ release. The fastball came out easy with life through the zone, 87-89 mph (T90), setting up a sharp slider with late lateral break at 78-79 mph with feel to land to his glove side. His final offering was a changeup around 75-79 mph, displaying gradual running action to his arm-side.

We're thankful for the POTW submissions we received from the coaches across the state. The players who garnered POTW consideration will earn a place within tomorrow's Diamond Notes story, so be on the lookout for that.
