Movers in the National Rankings: North Carolina Players on the Rise
The end of each season brings updates to the Prep Baseball rankings, as the scouting staff reviews and refines evaluations from across the country. State rankings are finalized first, then combined to form the Overall Rankings, built in collaboration between Prep Baseball’s State Directors, regional scouts, and National Crosschecker Shooter Hunt.
With the conclusion of the summer season, Prep Baseball has released updated 2026, 2027, and 2028 Overall Rankings.
North Carolina Talent on the Move
Each North Carolina class has grown with this update as the scouting staff continues to deepen its knowledge of players across the state. Through Prep Baseball events and tournaments, scouts are able to collect key stats, analytics, and video on players, while also supplementing those looks with live evaluations at workouts, practices, and games. The all-encompassing process provides a well-rounded picture of each player’s current ability and future projection.
The Overall Rankings are built from these state lists, with Shooter Hunt working closely with state and regional directors to determine where players stack up nationally. Hours of video review, game reports, and analytics go into every update, creating a list that reflects both performance and long-term projection.
North Carolina: A Hotbed of Talent
Year after year, North Carolina continues to produce high-level players. MLB Draft boards consistently feature talent with North Carolina roots, and the 2025, 2026, and 2027 classes appear to be no different. Younger classes are already drawing attention from college recruiters and pro scouts alike, solidifying the state as a steady producer of future impact players.
While many of the players appearing in the Overall Rankings are already familiar names within the state and region, there is always room for movement. Player development, growth, and in-game performance can quickly shift a prospect’s national standing.

Christian Serrano SS / 3B / Pro5 Baseball Acad., NC / 2026Moved from No. 107 to No. 86 NC State commit continues to be very productive. From his spring with Pro5 Baseball to the summer circuit, Serrano just keeps finding barrels and making routine plays, routine.

Gunnar Alm OF / LHP / Polk County, NC / 2026Moved from No. 429 to No. 87 Alm, a left-handed hitting outfielder, may have been the biggest mover in the country. Part, we were a bit light on him. A 6-foot build, Alm showed the ability to add strength to the frame and carry his actions across the entire summer. The swing has excellent leverage with advanced batspeed. Alm showed an ability to get to high end stuff. His workouts were good. His production in big events, including the Prep Baseball NPI, moved him past many of his peers. Watch for the scouting community to continue to dial into Alm. While there is history of the scouting community valuing physical outfielders, there is a new trend to take the uber-athletic outfielders that may be average to above defenders in the big-leagues. The gamble is how the bat will shake out, but that is the gamble on all position players. Over the past few years, players with similar profiles to Alm have been taken in the top 7 rounds.

Joshua Mozingo SS / OF / Terry Sanford, NC / 2026Moved from No. 394 to No. 287 Always buy athleticsim and quickness. Mozingo personifies a player with tons of athleticsim and quickness. The quickness plays in the feet, hands, and arm. The bat is the final piece to his prospect. An East Carolina commit, he may be in position to help the Pirates very quickly as he begins to add strength to the 6-foot frame. |

Nick Rumbley RHP / 1B / Rockingham County, NC / 2026Moved from No. 412 to No. 293 Rumbley is a pitcher. What everyone was buying in recent years was that the frame was going to fill out and as good as he moves, and as good as his feel is, the stuff is going to take a big jump. Flash forward to this summer and we are beginning to see that projection come to light. Look for Rumbley to be in a position to continue to grow. Guys that can pitch are seen as a lower risk, whether it is how they acclimate to college or pro baseball. |

Maddox McRee RHP / Hickory High School, NC / 2026Moved from No. 390 to No. 306 Our NC staff was probably a bit light on McRee as we have seen him a number of times early in the spring, after he spends the summer on the hardwood. A two-sport athlete, there is room to project McRee as he continues to catch up on the reps. The two-sport athlete, that can compete at the level McRee does, allows scouts to dream on where the prospect could be as he devotes more time to baseball. The fastball peaked at 93 per reports with Prep Baseball scouting staff seeing him carry 91 with some ease.

Quinn ORourke RHP / Charlotte Catholic, NC / 2026Moved from No. 473 to No. 446 O'Rourke was a bit of a new commodity heading into the spring of 2025. He had two big performances at the Charlotte Preseason ID and the North Carolina Procase, in the preseason. Fast forward to the summer and more of the Prep Baseball scouting staff was able to confirm what North Carolina scouts had seen, a big arm with good spin. The Arizona commit may continue move up the board as he continues to make strides with feel and pitch-ability. The stuff is real. |
2027 Overall Rankings: Risers

Connor Salerno LHP / OF / Sun Valley, NC / 2027Moved from No. 5 to No. 3 It is a small move in numbers but Salerno had one of the top summers, continuing that trend into the Prep Baseball All-American Game this past weekend in Miami. His outing at USA Baseball National Championships in Cary woke up those that may have been light on him. His outing at the East Coast Pro Showcase moved him into high 1st round range talk. While the outing at the All-American Game came after the rankings release, the outing staked Salerno as one of the top Lefties in the country, regardless of draft class. |
