HERITAGE VS. INDEPENDENCE

Evan Vanek, RHP, Frisco Heritage HS, 2019
Texas A&M commit. At 6-foot-2, 175-pounds, Vanek has a lean, projectable pitcher’s frame. The right-hander works from a ¾ slot with a long arm swing, a reach in the back, and quick hand out front. His fastball has exceptional movement with heavy arm side run and sink. First pitch of the game was 91 mph, but he sat mostly 88-89 in the first, flashing one 90. Very tough on RHH’s, got multiple week outs on the thumbs of hitters when he came inside. The couple of barrels he did give up were on elevated fastballs out over the plate early in the count when hitters were jumping on the first pitch they saw. His slider varies in shape and depth but still came in at 70-72. Command was a bit scattered (5 BB) but the natural stuff and quick arm is there. Showed some moxy working out of a couple of early jams, including bases loaded in the first, and runners on 2nd and 3rd in the second. Gave up 3 in the third (Unearned). Fastball velocity and sink was still there, sitting mostly 86-87, but still reaching back for an 89. Final line: 5 IP, 3 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 3 K, 5 BB.
