On Sunday, January 4th, the PB Texas staff traveled to Rice University in Houston, TX, to host the Houston Preseason ID, an open event for all high school classes.

More than 40 players made their way to Rice this past weekend and participated in a pro-style workout, gathering unrivaled access to data through our state-of-the-art tech partners, as well as in-depth scouting analysis from our Prep Baseball Texas staff.

We have already released a Statistical Analysis from the event, highlighting the top statistical performers. Today, we will provide our scouting takeaways on some of the prospects who stood out throughout the event.

QUICK HITS

Colton Castro | C/OF | Ridge Point | 2029 | R/R | 5’9” 150
Castro is a solid up and coming catcher for Ridge Point. Bested a 1.91 pop while averaging 75mph on his velo. Shows real mobility and quickness behind the plate and has soft hands while receiving. At the plate, Colton has quick hands and bat with a balanced swing. Projects to be a gap to gap style hitter.

Brooks Jacob | SS | Episcopal | 2029 | L/R | 5’9” 150
Jacob is a consistent/everyday type player that coaches love to have on their team. A solid defender with good actions on the dirt. Footwork and angles are solid. Decent arm that plays up with his quick release. From the left side of the plate, he has a short stroke and stays inside a ton of balls. Singles/doubles style hitter now but can add more extra base hits with some size. Will spray it all over the yard.

Tres Esquibel | SS/OF | Atascocita | 2027 | L/R | 5’6” 152
Esquibel had another good showing at Rice University. He’s a solid defender in the INF and OF. Projects as a second base type with good actions on the dirt. Consistent fielder. Shows bat to ball skill with some decent bat speed. Can spray it when he needs to. Has some sneaky pull side pop.

Liam Orenstein | C/RHP | Bridgeland | 2028 | R/R | 5’11” 160
Orenstein has multiple developing tools in his arsenal. He has solid arm strength posting 82-84mph on the bump and 78-79mph behind the dish. Pop time sat 1.97-2.04. Offensively, Liam shows good doubles pop with a quick bat. Boasted several 99mph exit velos and is developing a solid bat path.

Camden Kurtz | RHP/3B | Concordia Lutheran | 2027 | R/R | 5’9” 170
Kurtz really showed well on the mound this past weekend. FB sat 86-87 with some late life. Good rhythm and tempo to the delivery. Spins the CB at 2700+rpm and a late sharp break. SL is solid and shows more HM. Camden attacks the zone with his stuff and can really spin his breaking balls.

Hudson Sage | 3B/OF | St. Thomas | 2029 | R/R | 6’0” 185
Sage started off a solid day by running a 6.86 60. Showed some athleticism on the dirt with quick feet and a solid glove. At the plate, he has some strength and quickness to his hands and bat. Showed loud barrel with a gap to gap approach. Topped 102mph on exit velo.

Jesus Guerra | 3B/RHP | Episcopal | 2029 | R/R | 6’1” 185
Guerra shows real projectability on both sides of the baseball. Decent actions on the dirt with a quick arm across the diamond. Topped 91mph. At the plate, Jesus has good rhythm and can turn the barrel out well. Shows solid pop which will only improve with maturity. Arm strength also showed up on the mound. FB sat 84-86 with some life. Developing breaking ball and CH.

Vincent Pawlak | RHP | Stratford | 2029 | R/R | 6’5” 185
Pawlak has a big/tall frame with a ton of upside. Sat 86-87 and T88 with a H3/4 slot. Showed command of all pitches with a spin 2400+ rpm on his breaking ball. SL has a quick and late break. Plus CH with solid ASR. Very projectable arm that already shows some pitch ability and feel.

Luke Daigle | RHP | Cypress Ranch | 2027 | R/R | 6’3” 188
Daigle has a live arm and throws from a ¾ slot. FB sat 87-89 with some sink. SL spun around the 2400rpm mark with some decent sweep. Solid CH with good speed differential and compliments his FB. Luke has a repeatable delivery and feel for all 3 pitches. Will be a good guy to watch this spring.

Kai Anderson | OF | Ridge Point | 2028 | R/R | 6’0” 195
Anderson is a very physical and athletic player for his class. His build and frame really look the part. An athletic mover in the field. Ran a 6.94 60 and showed agility in the OF. Solid arm and topped 80 from RF. Offensively, he shows raw strength and power with some bat speed. Consistent barrel and topped 100mph exit velo.

Cody Carlton | RHP/1B | The John Cooper School | 2029 | 6’2” 195
Carlton had a solid showing on both sides of the ball. On the bump, he sat 81-83 with ~19 IVB and commanded it well. The SL had a quick and late break and with good rotation. CH has good sink and will be even more effective when he can soften it a little more. At 1B, he moves well for a big frame with good glove actions and rhythm to feet. Cody also shows solid pop with his bat, delivering some strength and gap to gap pop. More to come from Carlton as he continues to develop and mature.
