California State Games: 2027 Catcher Analysis

Starting on July 30th, the Prep Baseball California team hosted the California State Games at Fullerton College and High School in Fullerton, Cal. This was an invite-only event for high school classes (2026-2029), and gave our staff an ample look at the state's top prospects.

Today, we continue the release of the scouting reports from the event, now looking at the 2027 catchers:

TOP 2027 CATCHING PROSPECTS

1. Sean Brian, Los Osos High (CA), 2027
Positional Profile: C Compact, strong catcher with sound defensive actions, quick and accurate throws, and a level, line-drive oriented swing.
Body: 5-8, 172-pounds. Compact, athletic build with present strength in the lower half.
Hit: RHH. Starts from a slightly open stance with weight favoring the back leg and hands set above the rear shoulder. Sinks into the back side during the load. Level path through the zone with a controlled, two-handed finish. 58.3 mph bat speed with 3g of rotational acceleration.
Power: 86 mph max exit velocity (80.1 avg.); 280-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. C - 77 mph. Compact arm action with consistent accuracy, showing natural arm-side run on throws to the 2B bag.
Defense: 2.08-2.16 pop time range; Quick transfer into release with efficient footwork, gaining ground toward 2B. Fundamentally sound defensive mechanics.
Athletic Testing: 7.52 runner in the 60-yard dash; 18.60-inch max vertical jump.
