Starting on July 30th, the Prep Baseball California team hosted the California State Games at Fullerton College and High School in Fullerton, Cal. This was an invite-only event for high school classes (2026-2029), and gave our staff an ample look at the state's top prospects.

Today, we continue the release of the scouting reports from the event, now looking at the 2028/2029 catchers:

TOP 2028/2029 CATCHING PROSPECTS

1. Cooper Cantrell, Martin Luther King Jr. (CA), 2028
Positional Profile: C/OF Athletic backstop who creates consistent lift and displays present power to the pull side.
Body: 5-6, 160-pounds. Strong, well-proportioned build with room for future physical development.
Hit: RHH. Upright, open stance with hands at shoulder level, raised back elbow, and barrel vertical, showing minimal hand movement pre-load. Initiates the load by sitting into the back knee with a slight bat waggle as the hands begin to drift back. Uses a small leg kick before a short, controlled stride forward. Turns hips at foot strike to create some separation, while staying short to the ball. Works on an uphill bat path that promotes lift and carry, showing a pull-side and up-the-middle approach. Makes frequent hard contact and displays present pop to the pull side. Will add bat speed as frame fills out. 64 mph bat speed with 9g of rotational acceleration.
Power: 92 mph max exit velocity (83.3 avg.); 329-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. C - 71 mph. Compact arm path with an over-the-top release. Accurate throws to the bag, with arm strength likely to improve as the frame continues to fill out.
Defense: 2.06-2.07 pop time range; Sets up in a low crouch and receives with soft hands. Shows athleticism coming out of the crouch with quick footwork, paired with clean and efficient transfers.
Athletic Testing: 7.37 runner in the 60-yard dash; 21.90-inch max vertical jump.
