Elgin CC Scout Day: Takeaways

On Tuesday, September 16th, the Prep Baseball Illinois staff traveled to Elgin College in Elgin, IL, to host the annual Elgin College Scout Day, an open event for all members of the Elgin College Spartans.

Today, we are taking a look at some of the day’s top performers, broken down by each program, with scouting reports and videos, below.

POSITION PLAYERS

Fr. OF Connor Lund (South Elgin) is a strong 5-foot-10, 181-pound athlete with room to continue to fill out. The outfielder started his day running a 6.62 60-yard dash which was the top recorded time of the day. At the plate the right-handed hitter swung a smooth and on-plane bat with feel for the barrel, reaching a top exit velo of 91.7 mph with a 330 foot max distance. Defensively in the outfield playing with athletic actions with arm strength up to 82 mph.

Fr. INF Jack Perrone (Hampshire) is an athletic and projectable 6-foot, 160-pound infielder with room to add to his frame. Perrone started his day running a 6.67 60-yard dash with a 1.62 10-yard split. At the plate the right-handed hitter was consistently on the barrel throughout his round, swinging a smooth and quick bat with some impact at contact reaching a max exit velocity of 95.6 mph. Defensively Perrone is a steady defender with arm strength up to 81 mph.

RFr. OF Nathan Gerritsen (Jacobs) stands at a 5-foot-11, 170-pound frame with room to continue to fill out. Started the day running a 6.71 60-yard dash with a 1.64 10-yard split. At the plate the left-handed hitter was able to barrel the ball with ease throughout his round of BP reaching a max exit velo of 89 mph throughout the round. Defensively the outfielder plays with athletic actions with footspeed to pair and arm strength up to 87 mph.

So. MIF Enzo Novelli (Larkin) stands at 6-foot, 175-pounds with room to continue to add to his frame. Novelli started his day running a 6.86 60-yard dash with foot speed that translates in game. At the plate the right-handed hitter swings a smooth and flat right-handed bat with feel for the barrel, reaching a peak exit velocity of 93.6 mph with feel to spray line drives throughout the field. Defensively the infielder has footspeed that plays in the field with steady actions and arm strength up to 76 mph.

So. OF Carter Novelli (Larkin) stands at 6-foot, 178-pounds with room to fill out, started his day by running a 6.96 60-yard dash. At the plate the right-handed hitter found the barrel consistently, taking a flat path through the baseball reaching a max exit velo of 94.9 mph, spraying line drives throughout the entire field. Defensively, took a direct route to the baseball with arm strength up to 78 mph.

So. C/OF Wyatt Sabalaskey (Glenbard North) is a physical right-handed hitter standing at 6-foot-2, 180-pounds with strength and even more room to add to his frame. Sabalaskey started his day running a 7.18 60-yard dash before taking a standout round of BP. Consistently finding the barrel throughout the round, reaching a max exit velo of 99 mph while averaging 92.7 mph throughout the round. Defensively taking reps both behind the plate and in the outfield, showing steady actions while attacking the ball in the outfield with arm strength up to 86 mph. At catcher, showing steady actions and reliable hands and arm strength up to 79 mph with a pop time range of 1.94-2.12.

RFr. C/INF Maddux Clarence (DeKalb) is a physical right-handed hitting catcher/first baseman that took a standout round of BP. Standing at 5-foot-11, 215-pounds with strength throughout his frame. The right-handed hitter took a consistent round finding the barrel with impact with ease, working in rhythm throughout with bat speed averaging 73.1 mph that he gets to with minimal effort while reaching a max exit velo of 98.5 mph with a 95.0 mph average. Defensively behind the plate, showing clean actions with arm strength up to 76 mph with pop times ranging from 1.90-2.00, in the infield showing athletic and soft action with a clean and athletic arm up to 82 mph across the diamond, light footed with range and feel for the bag to pair.

RFr. INF Matthew Rosado (Sycamore) is listed at a strong 6-foot, 220-pound frame with strength. The right-handed hitter took a loud round of BP, swinging with the intent to damage the baseball while making consistent contact out front with leverage to drive the ball in the air. Rosado reached a max exit velo of 95.7 mph with an average of 91.8 mph while driving the ball on a line with backspin and carry mostly to the pull side. Defensively the infielder plays with smooth actions and reliable hands with arm strength up to 80 mph across the diamond.

PITCHERS

So. RHP Brady Rickert (Oak Creek, WI) measures 5-foot-10, 190-pounds, the right-hander flashed a four pitch mix throughout his bullpen. The fastball sat 86-87 mph, held velocity throughout with an avg. spin rate of 2203 rpm and 13 in. of avg. HM. Showed a slider in the low 70s with -16 in. of avg. HM. Showcased a splitter at 75-78 mph, with low spin rates (872 avg) and sink. Finally, the cutter was in the upper-70s with higher spin rates and command. Rickert was a winner from the event.

So. RHP Josh Caccia (St. Charles North) tossed one of the most impressive bullpens of the afternoon. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound right-hander showed off a fastball sitting 86-87 mph throughout, held velocity, with 2201 avg. spin rate and 12 in. of avg. HM, the curveball sat in the mid 70s with spin rates north of 2300 rpm, and flashed a slider in the low-70s with -14 in. of avg. HM. Caccia tossed a cutter in the mid 70s with command.

Fr. RHP Sean Sherwood (Prairie Ridge) a 6-foot-2, 186 pound freshman, Sherwood showed intriguing stuff in the ‘pen. Ran the fastball up to 88 mph, sitting 84-87 mph with an avg. of 15 in. of avg. IVB. Sherwood showed three offspeeds, the curveball sat in the lower 70s with an avg. of 2150 rpm, the slider worked in the lower 70s with some HM and an avg. of 2152 rpm. Finally, flashed a changeup in the mid 70s with lower spin rates and an avg. of 12 in. of avg. HM. Sherwood looks to have an impact in his first-year with the Spartans.

So. RHP Jack Bennett (St. Charles East) stands 6-foot-2, 190-pounds, Bennett threw one of the loudest ‘pens of the afternoon. The fastball was firm with some higher spin rates, sat 87-89.5 T90.2 mph with an avg. spin rate of 2301 rpm, and 14 in of avg. HM and command. The slider was in the upper 70s with an avg. spin rate of 2752 rpm, was around the zone. The changeup worked in the lower 80s with an avg. of 18 in. of avg HM with ASR/S. Bennett mixed in a sinker in the mid 80s with an avg. HM of 17 in. An impressive showing for the sophomore.

RSo. RHP Nic DiMarzio (Hampshire) showed well at the event. The 6-foot-5, 190-pound right-hander had the second best fastball velocity of the event, sitting 88-90 T90.3 mph with high spin rates (2427 avg.) and an avg. HM of 17 in., showed a slider at 70-75 mph with -15 in. of avg. HM and an avg. spin rate of 2154 rpm, the final pitch of his repertoire, a changeup in the low to mid 80s with an avg. of 17 in. of avg HM. DiMarzio impressed and looks to have an impact on the mound for the Spartans.

So. RHP Brendan Campbell (Bartlett) was top of the leaderboard for fastball velocity, touching 91 mph, sitting 89-90 mph for strikes. Campbell flashed a slider for strikes at 75-78 mph with an avg. of 2135 rpm, and a changeup at 79-81 mph with ASR and an avg. of 15 in. of HM. Campbell showed feel and command for all pitches and was arguably the biggest standout in the bullpen from the event.
