Brings a lean and athletic frame to the stage with plenty of room to continue to grow and elevate his game. Wilson has a high upside for the years to come that many should be looking forward to seeing.
We recently had a chance to talk to Wilson about his recruitment process, along with some other fun topics, below.
Our Q&A
Prep Baseball: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?
Sawyer: My expectations about the recruiting process were very mediocre. I was not expecting a lot; but I was for sure hoping for a lot of attention. But in a college program I was looking for somewhere that felt like home. Where I could go and feel comfortable. I wanted to go somewhere I could make an impact as soon as I get there. I also was looking for a place with a good atmosphere and great guys around me and I found that at UCA.
PB: What do you like most about the program you chose, and what were the key factors in making your decision?
S: The things I liked most about UCA was the atmosphere and the coaches. The coaches have a ton of faith in me and I felt as if they believed I could make a huge impact at UCA. Some key factors that made my decision very easy were the facilities and weight room were very nice. And I know i’ve said it a lot, but the coaches had a ton of impact and push for me to make my decision. Coach Harlan and Coach Davenport made me feel as if I was very welcome and like I was at home. They brought me in for my visit and it was a blast.
PB: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?
S: The advice I would give to young players is to never let one mistake or mess up define your day. Don’t let one error or strikeout make your day a bad one.
PB: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?
S: It was definitely a key factor. Living in Benton it is really close to home.
PB: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Where did the school you committed to first see you play?
S: The process really started for me when I was at a PBR event in Atlanta and I had a great performance there and after then, I started getting more attentions. The first time UCA saw me was at a camp I went to at UCA. I had a great performance that day. I hit and pitched really well and the coaches were really impressed.
PB: Was there a particular Prep Baseball tournament or showcase that helped accelerate your recruiting process? If yes, how so?
S: I believe it was the NPI in Atlanta. I played really well that weekend and pitched a really great game. I also had a few hits that stood out.
PB: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?
S: I actually did not have any schools on a list before I made my decision.
PB: Who is the best player you have faced in your state? What about them makes for a tough opponent?
S: In my opinion Trystan Newberry. He is a great pitcher from the left side who really hits his spots and knows good sequences to mix you up.
PB: If you could steal any tool or quality from another player in the state, what would it be and who would it be from?
S: If I had to choose one quality it would be the strength of Max Holland.
PB: Who is the next talented young player to keep an eye on out of your high school or travel program?
S: Caleb Curry
PB: At what point in your career did you realize you were a college-caliber player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?
S: The point I realized I was at the college-caliber was when I started to go to the Arkansas Prospects Academy and I was chosen to play for Spects National. That is when I saw my game develop and seen myself become a college level player.
PB: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?
S: My most memorable moment in my baseball career I went to UCA and I got asked to stay after to talk to the coaches. That is when they invited me for a visit. That is my most memorable part of my baseball career.
PB: Preview your high school team's season for us. How do you feel your team will be?
S: I believe our season withholds a lot this year. We have a very young and talented team. Our strong suit this year will be pitching. We have our pitching from the past years and we have a very good chance to go far this year. I am very excited to see how we do this season.
