Q&A with Southern Miss Commit Shaun Cover

Mikel Howell

Elite bat-to-ball skills headline C Shaun Cover (Conway), showing advanced barrel control and consistent hard contact to all fields. A phenomenal all-around athlete, Cover moves exceptionally well behind the plate and shows quick, efficient actions with strong body control. Offensively, the swing is compact, repeatable, and projects to impact at higher levels. The athleticism and feel for the game give him significant upside on both sides of the ball.

We recently had the chance to talk to Cover about his recruitment process, along with some other fun topics, below.

Our Q&A

Prep Baseball: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?

Shaun: I wasn’t expecting a ton of calls at first but I wanted to go to a school that actually wanted me to play there. I didn’t want to go somewhere where I was just a second option. I also wanted to choose a school that knew how to develop players.

PB: What do you like most about the program you chose, and what were the key factors in making your decision?

S: I loved the coaches and they also have a really strong fan base. I feel like I would actually enjoy playing there. They have great facilities that are going to continue to get even better and I know the coaches will push me to succeed.

PB: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?

S: I would tell them to just go play as much as possible. There’s always someone watching and you just need to make sure your always playing with confidence and maturity even if you are not playing good.

PB: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?

S: Distance definitely played a big part because I didn’t want to go too far from home where all my friends would be but I also wanted to do what’s best for me.

PB: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Where did the school you committed to first see you play?

S: The recruiting process was hot right off the bat on August 1st for me. Southern Miss had seen me play at the future games.

PB: Was there a particular Prep Baseball tournament or showcase that helped accelerate your recruiting process? If yes, how so?

S: Future Games because since everyone there is good, a lot of division 1 schools will always be watching.

PB: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?

S: Arkansas, Southern Miss, Missouri

PB: Who is the best player you have faced in your state? What about them makes for a tough opponent?

S: I would say Mark Brissey because he tunnels his slider so well off of his fastball.

PB: If you could steal any tool or quality from another player in the state, what would it be and who would it be from?

S: I would probably steal Max Holland's catching ability because it’s so smooth and has turned him into an elite player.

PB: Who is the next talented young player to keep an eye on out of your high school or travel program?

S: Nate Wanamaker

PB: At what point in your career did you realize you were a college-caliber player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?

S: When I got to high school and actually earned a spot on varsity as a freshman I feel like that was a big turning point in my career where I knew I needed to take baseball more seriously.

PB: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?

S: I would say hitting a wall of home run off of Logan Schmidt.

PB: Preview your high school team's season for us. How do you feel your team will be?

S: I think my team will one of if not the best team in the state. We have a lot of returning seniors who have played together for a long time like me, Max Holland, London Stewart, Willy Voss, and Owen Davenport. There’s a few more good players but we will be really good.
