Prep Baseball Louisiana 2025 Game of the Week: John Curtis Christian vs. St. Augustine (Week 6)

Alex Armand
Louisiana Scouting Director

Last week, we headed to the New Orleans, LA area to see the Holy Cross Tigers take on the Belle Chasse Cardinals in Game 2 of their three-game series. The Cardinals gave the Tigers their best shot, but Holy Cross ended up sweeping the series to move their season record to a perfect 15-0.

This week, district play opens up for the majority of teams across the state and we've got an excellent district rivalry in store for high school baseball fans. Our Week 5 Game of the Week features the Teurlings Catholic Rebels taking on the St. Thomas More Cougars in a District 4-4A heavyweight matchup. The Rebels and Cougars have both gotten off to a good start this season with Teurlings Catholic sitting at 13-3 and St. Thomas More at 11-3. GAME OF THE WEEK PREVIEW

Our Week 6 Game of the Week is shaping up to be a really good one, as John Curtis Christian travels to St. Augustine for a District 9-5A clash. John Curtis Christian enters Week 6 with an overall record of 11-7 and are coming off a tough two-game series against Holy Cross, where they lost both games to the Tigers. Meanwhile, St. Augustine has won their last five straight games with three wins last week against De La Salle and a two-game district sweep of Warren Easton.

John Curtis Christian

The Select Division I State Runner Up's a season ago; John Curtis Christian enters Week 6 with an 11-7 overall record.  The Patriots have a team that can make a deep postseason run and a good showing this week could propel them to a strong regular season finish.

The table-setter at the top of the Patriots offense is junior CF Nate Alario.  He's a "spark-plug" type of player and is coming off a pretty good week at the plate, as he went 3-for-7 with 2 doubles and 4 stolen bases in two games last week.  Senior 2B Jason Curtis is a three-year starter and one of the team's leaders.  Over the last six games, he's gone 5-for-16 (.313) with 3 runs batted in, 2 runs scored, 3 walks, and also has 2 stolen bases.  Junior SS Connor Micheu is another exciting guy in the Patriots lineup.  In their two games last week, the Southeastern Louisiana commit went 1-for-2 with a triple, 1 run batted in, and also had 3 walks.  The Patriots pitching staff is made up of a mix guys this spring.  Senior RHP Juan Washington and junior RHP Kolston Martinez lead the team with three wins a piece.  Washington has also swung the bat well over the past couple of weeks, as he's hitting at a .375 clip across the Patriots last six games.

St. Augustine

The Purple Knights have been playing really good baseball as of late, as they've won their last five straight games to improve their overall season record to 12-5.

St. Augustine's offense was really good last week with two seniors at the top of the lineup.  Senior SS Kenyon Hughes sets the table as the Purple Knight's leadoff hitter.  Last week in their three games, Hughes went 4-for-8 with 1 homerun, 2 triples, 3 runs batted in, 6 runs scored, and also stole 2 bases.  Senior 3B/RHP Bryce Robinson has also been seeing the ball well at the plate, as he went 4-for-7 with 1 double, 4 runs batted in, 6 runs scored, and also had 4 walks.  The Tulane recruit should also get a start in one of these two games against John Curtis.  Robinson is one of the more projectable arms in the state's 2025 class with a fastball that reaches into the low-90's.  Sandwiched in between those two guys is junior OF Isaiah Fields, who has also been swinging the bat really well as of late.  Fields went 3-for-7 with 3 runs batted in, 6 runs scored, and had 4 stolen bases in three games last week.  The Purple Knights pitching staff is made up of a whole lot more than just Robinson.  His little brother, Dylan Robinson, who is a sophomore, has won his last two starts with a combined 12 strikeouts.  Junior Channing Cornelius Jr. was also really good last week in his start against Warren Easton, as he threw 4 no-hit innings with 11 strikeouts.

Both John Curtis Christian and St. Augustine have goals and aspirations of making a run in the postseason.  Their two-game set this week could propel either team into a run through the end of district play and into the playoffs.  Catholic League fans in the New Orleans area will get treated to what should be a competitive and hard-fought matchup.
