Each week, our staff updated the Power 25 and provides key talking points from games the week prior. This week, we see the top two remain the same with a plethora of movement throughout, including six new teams that jump into the fold.

Talking Points

  • Spalding vs. Calvert Hall at No. 1. We go with Spalding remaining at No. 1 after they slipped up and lost a game vs. unranked Archbishop Curley, as Calvert Hall rolled last week to a three game sweep over Loyola Blakefield. Our staff went back and forth for a long time about this one, however we weighed the success of Spalding’s out-of-conference wins and their overall play so far this spring to give them a slight edge over the Cardinals.
  • WJ slides up 7 spots after a 2-1 week. After dominating Blake and Blair early in the week, the Wildcats locked horns with powerhouse Walt Whitman on Saturday that saw seven lead changes and an eventual 6-5 win for Whitman. The early success of WJ has proven their longevity and we see this as one of the teams to beat across MoCo all spring long.
  • Significant movement at the bottom after an upset-filled week. Severna Park, Chesapeake-AA, La Plata, Parkside, and Saint Michaels all took unexpected losses last week and see a drop completely from the top 25. Due to those upset losses, we see six teams jump inside the rankings for the first time.

Winners

  • DeMatha jumps John Carroll and moves to #3 after a standout showing at LakePoint, going 4-1 before returning north and defeating VA powerhouse Bishop O’Connell.
  • Broadneck takes another big jump into the top 10 after another undefeated week, bringing their record to 5-0 on the season.
  • Good Counsel makes a massive jump from unranked to #11 after a big showing out-of-state. After some struggle to start the season, the Falcons are on a roll, winning 8 of their last 9 games and roaring to an 9-3 record as they plan to match up with DeMatha on Tuesday.
  • BCC has definitely answered any potential question marks headed into the spring as they’ve surged to a 4-0 record behind a brand new coach and a lights out pitching staff. Henry Eichner and Bryan Doukouris have been lights out as they prepare for a gauntlet stretch, including WJ and Whitman this upcoming week.
  • Leonardtown has continued their momentum from last season’s state title win into this season, as they’ve cruised to a 4-0 record inside the SMAC with some impressive wins such as La Plata. They slide in at #15.
  • Old Mill slides into the Power 25 after an impressive 3-0 week, including a no-hitter on Monday night against previously ranked Severna Park. The Patriots will have to secure their spot, as they have tough matchups with Chesapeake and Broadneck in the coming week.

Seeking Improvement

  • Severna Park finds themselves 2-2 on the young season, and look to regain some momentum after going 2-1 last week. A big win over Northeast, however a key loss to Old Mill finds the Falcons right outside the Top 25.
  • Chesapeake-AA started the week with a nice win over Arundel, however a shocking loss to South River and a gut-wrenching loss to rival Northeast sees the Cougars fall out after sustaining two losses
  • La Plata tied North Point and lost to Chopticon last week following a 1-0 loss to Patuxent the week prior. This La Plata team is still highly regarded in our eyes, however falls outside the Top 25 still looking for their 1st win
  • Although Parkside picked up two wins last week, a tough loss to rival Easton sees the Rams fall outside the Top 25 in this update. A huge week is coming up however, as the Rams battle James M. Bennett on Monday and Stephen Decatur on Tuesday of this week.
  • Saint Michaels turned in a 1-1 week after a tough loss to Snow Hill on Monday and then turned it around and no-hit Kent County on Thursday. The loss to Snow Hill drops the Saints out, however momentum after the no-hitter may see Saint Michaels get on a roll this week with a big matchup with Jordan Regulski and Colonel Richardson on Thursday.
