This week we take a look at the matchup between North Medford and Ida B Wells as they faced off in the Mountainside Spring Break tournament.

North Medford vs Ida B Wells

Ida B Wells

‘27 LHP Jack Burnham (Ida B Wells)
Burnham comes at hitters from a low ¾ slot while still being able to work downhill thanks to his 6’5 frame. Shows a low leg lift at balance with a controlled fall into landing. The lower slot produces consistent arm side run on his low 80’s fastball. Combines the FB with a CB at 63-66 that shows depth and downer shape. Showed willingness to work to both sides of the plate and was able to pitch out of some jams. Uncommitted

Final Line - 4.0 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 7 K

‘25 OF Diggy Griffin (Ida B Wells)
Had a big day offensively for the Guardians. Finished 3-3 with 3B,  2 R, 2 RBI and a SB. Produced hard contact in multiple ABs and pushed the OF back when he connected. Hits from an upright stance with small toe tap load before taking a longer stride into landing. Swing gets on plane early & covers the zone. Toolsy OF prospect showed off some quality speed on this look as well. Uncommitted.

‘28 INF Micah Burrell (Ida B Wells)
The Guardians showed confidence in the standout Freshman by having hit in the 3 hole in a lineup deep & experienced line-up. Standing in the box with a balanced stance, he rocks his weight back & loads with a slight elbow/hands lift then takes a small stride into landing. Stays athletic throughout the swing. Finishes with an open lower half & gets moving out of the box quickly. Defensively made multiple plays at 2B throughout the day. Name to know in the 2028 class moving forward.

Finished 4-4, 3 RBI, BB, SB

‘25 SS Cam Hammer (Ida B Wells)
Hammer was the obvious senior leader on the field, communicating with the entire field, holding down SS. Consistent performance on defense making multiple plays to help the Guardians out of some jams. Athletically built 5’10 framed Infielder. Hits from a  wide stance, with hands already in the hitting slot. Uses a soft rock back with his weight and very little hand load in his pre-swing. Small front foot stride into his landing with few moving parts Went 2-5 with a RBI on the day. Willamette commit

‘25 RHP Elliiot Benjamin (Ida B Wells)
Earned the save for the Guardians with 3 scoreless innings of relief..  Benjamin consistently kept hitters  off-balance with a consistent FB/CB combination Nothing overpowering in terms of velo or pure stuff but executed at a high rate and filled up the zone. Uses a simplified delivery from the stretch with a longer, continuous arm path. Uncommitted.

3 IP, H, 0 R

North Medford

‘27 LHP Cade Pettersen (North Medford)
Starter for the Black Tornado’s was Cade Pettersen. Pettersen has an athletic build on his 6’1, 195 lb frame. On the mound, delivers from a 3/4 arm slot that helps to provide some arm side run to his FB at 79-82. Used SL at 72-73 as his main secondary on this look. Pettersen showed some toughness and poise in a shorter 3 inning stint as he battled through some command and did his best to navigate out of some tough situations. Overall he has a solid foundation to build off of on the mound and will be an arm to keep an eye on as he continues to develop. Uncommitted.

‘25 OF Jake Payton (North Medford)
Tough day offensively for North Medford with only 3 hits on the day but Payton was a standout bat on this look. Took consistent swings all afternoon with a line drive single and multiple barrels in his other ABs. The RHH has a wide base that allows him to rock back to coil the hips and times everything up with a small stride. Releases the hands with extension out front after contact. 1-3 on the day.

‘25 INF Macen Baker (North Medford)
Baker went 1-3 with a RBI on the day. Sets up with a tall stance, holding his hands at shoulder height with a small leg lift on the front side to gather. Gets a small rotational load of the hips and hands before his foot gets down and triggers his swing. Finishes with an uphill path that can produce consistent lift.
