Class of 2024 Inside the Rankings: Up Next

Each week leading up to the new year, we'll be rolling out Inside the Rankings articles to further highlight the movement around the ‘24 classes in PA and NY. This week’s focus shifts the scope to “Up Next,” a highly ranked two-way prospect with a chance to rise. 

2024 OF/rhp zane griffaton (west mifflin)

The Spin: After a strong Team PA Junior Future Games performance in 2020, Griffaton enjoyed a breakout 2021 campaign, asserting himself as one of the more productive Freshman in the WPIAL. The West Mifflin OF/RHP slashed .375/.447/.600 for the Titans with three triples, spinning a 6-0, 1.28 ERA line on the bump in 27IP.  A lengthy, highly-athletic 6-foot, 173lb frame continues allowing his unique two-way skillset to bounce around, as 60-yard dash times have lowered into the 6.73 second range. New and improved measurable increases across the board have yielded upper-80’s arm-strength (86 mph) and a much more compact extra-base hit approach at the plate (91 mph exit velocity). On the bump, a low-80’s FB generates some extra play up in the zone with an average of 6.8 feet of extension and 17 inches of induced vertical break while leveraging a short-breaking SL at 68-71 mph. It’s not hard to believe that additional velocity will be on the way soon with a fluid, up-tempo delivery and consistent lower-half drive down the slope. We’ll be getting another close look at Griffaton in just under two weeks at the Preseason All-State Southwest on February 12th.

The Performance: 6/15/21, Pennsylvania State Games | Set personal bests with a 6.73 60-yard dash, 86 mph OF arm, 91 mph exit velocity, 86 mph average exit velocity, 100% sweet spot, 71% line drive rate, 85% on-plane, and 22 mph hand-speed. Produced two extra-base hits in gameplay and pitched a scoreless inning.
