SoCal Players of the Week: Ashwin Chona & Jared Jones

For the first time in the 2019 season we have Co-Players of the Week in SoCal for the week of March 11th - March 17th. That’s what happens when you have two pitchers throw perfect games. For their performances last week Ashwin Chona and Jared Jones have named the Prep Baseball Report SoCal Players of the Week.

On 3/12/19 Ashwin Chona threw his perfect game against Southlands Christian in the Lightning’s 10-0 win. In the game Chona recorded 19 strikeouts in his outing while also contributing two hits on offense. Chona is not unfamiliar with these types of outings as he has multiple no-hitters on his record. The senior NYU commit had a streak of three consecutive no-hitters his sophomore season.

Chona is a fun pitcher to watch as he’s your typical crafty lefty that can surprise you and run one past you. He understands the craft of pitching and mixes his pitches well while working down in the zone.

On the same day Jared Jones of La Mirada, the #5 team in the PBR CA Power 25,  tossed his own perfect game against league rival Bellflower. The junior USC commit registered 10 strikeouts en route to the perfect game on only 81 pitches. For good measure he batted .500 on the week with six stolen bases and six runs scored. Jones continues to do things on the baseball field that support his #1 ranking in the 2020 class in California.

With a fastball that has touched 98 this spring, Jones features one of the best sliders in his class in the state while not being a guy that just reaches back and blows it by hitters. Jones is a guy that can use a fastball, curveball, or slider as a strikeout pitch as all three are above average pitches presently.

For their efforts last week Ashwin Chona and Jared Jones have been named the Prep Baseball Report SoCal Players of the Week for the week of March 11th - March 17th. We salute their accomplishments and wish them and their teams continued success both on-and-off the field.
