Wisconsin prospects have continued to gain national recognition in recent years. Following last month’s rankings update, 12 players from the Badger State 2027 class earned spots inside the national top-500. Today, we highlight the highest-ranked third basemen of the group, Cooper Schaefgen (Oconomowoc, 2027).

Schaefgen made his commitment to Louisville before he stepped foot on a high school baseball field, making his commitment to Cardinals before the 2022 recruiting rule change. Schaefgen was the final pre-high school commitment before the new recruiting rules. The third-basemen is ranked No. 3 in the state's 2027 class, No. 264 nationally, and the No. 17 ranked third basemen in the nation.

Scouting Report

4/19/25

One of the top performers in Wisconsin this spring, Schaefgen, would take quality at-bats throughout the day thanks to a patient approach that would result in him going 1-for-2 with 2 RBIs, two walks, and one run scored. The right-handed hitter would take controlled, intentful swings while hitting from an athletic wider base with a short stride that allowed him to get the barrel out front with a direct bat path. Schaefgen would also show well on the mound Saturday, throwing a singular inning out of relief and collecting all three outs via strikeout. The fastball would sit 84-86 and was paired with a mid-70s breaker with 12/6 shape. Strong 6-foot-1, 219-pound frame.

4/12/25

Louisville commit, a top player in the state’s sophomore class. Listed at 6-foot-1, 219 pounds with proportional strength to the build. Hit third and started on the mound for the Raccoons. One of the top pure hitters in the Midwest, Schaefgen routinely finds the barrel and drives the ball with authority. Driving a couple of balls to the warning track in center field, only coming up with one hit to show for it however. Simple and balanced swing from the right-side with easy power and natural bat-to-ball traits that only add to the profile offensively.

2/26/25

+ Young for the sophomore class, 3B/RHP Cooper Schaefgen (Oconomowoc, 2027; Louisville) doesn’t swing like it. Schaefgen’s earned an early reputation as one of the most productive hitters in this class, and we’ve seen a mature approach in the box in live game settings, and his latest offseason appears to have boosted his batted-ball profile in the meantime. Listed at a physical 6-foot-1, 219 pounds, the Ocon sophomore recorded one of the highest average exit speeds of the entire event (93.5 mph) with a 99.4 mph max. The right-handed slugger also moves very well for his age and stature, recording a 7.07 time in the 60-yard dash, and he’s also armed with plenty of strength to fit the third base mold, with 89 mph throws across. And while his future seems brightest positionally, Schaefgen’s arm strength also translates well on the mound, with mid-80s velo (86.5 mph max) on a high carry fastball. He’s one of the top sophomores in the area.

Listed at 6-foot, 189-pounds with some strength throughout, the right-hander displayed a simple and repeatable operation that works in-line down the mound, utilizing his lower-half well before transitioning into a high 3/4 release. His fastball played in the 81-84 mph range, topping out at 84.6 mph with some life and carry through the zone. He also went to a short 11/5 curveball at 67-71 mph, showing some feel around the zone. His final offering was a changeup at 72-74 mph, playing clean out of the hand with some run to his arm-side, kept mostly to that side of the plate as well. Schaefgen continues to impress us with his work as a third base prospect, too. He hits with a short and compact bat path that stays in the zone for a long time which allowed him to be all over the barrel during batting practice. His 95.3 mph max exit velocity was amongst the day’s best and second best for the 2027 class participants. His 91.7 mph average exit velocity was also up there, too. The freshman’s actions and his 81 mph velocity across the infield with accuracy are plenty good to stick at third, as well.

Schaefgen effortlessly taps into his power on every swing and showed the ability to be on the barrel with authority, collecting multiple extra base hits other the weekend. Defensively, at the hot corner Schaefgen has an advanced glove, making tough plays and showing the ability to control his body and flashed enough arm talent to be able to stick on the left side of the infield going further. Schaefgen will be a name to monitor throughout the summer circuit and as he starts his prep career.

Schaefgen is a large framed, projectible young prospect for this Hitters Navy team who has shown well during the 13U PBR at The Rock Summer Championships. Offensively, Schaefgen utilizes a clean, efficient swing that gets to the baseball quickly. His hand eye coordination is also something that is impressive as it seemed he found multiple barrels, driving the ball to all fields. At the hot corner, Schaefgen showcases solid infield actions and a repeatable over the top arm action.
