Prep Baseball Louisiana: 2026 Preseason Power 25 Rankings (#11 University Lab)

Alex Armand
Louisiana Scouting Director

Well, it is that time of the year again in Louisiana!  The high school baseball season is getting awfully close with the first official games taking place on Monday February 9, 2026.  Last season, our staff was able to see more games than ever before, in every part of the state, and our goal is to see even more teams and prospects this spring.  To kick-off our wall-to-wall high school baseball coverage, we've put together the preseason release of our Power 25 Rankings.  Our staff has diligently worked at ranking these teams by looking at their accomplishments from last season, key losses, and returning impact players.  As with every ranking, this list will change throughout the high school baseball season, as teams start to take shape and form.  Our plan is to update the Power 25 Rankings every two weeks during the season.  Be sure to follow us, across all of our social media platforms, for the most comprehensive Louisiana High School baseball coverage in 2026!

Team Preview

The University Lab Cubs enter the 2026 season with unfinished business after falling just short of capturing a state championship in last spring’s Select Division III state title series. Head Coach Jon Ramsey’s group brings back a wealth of experience across the diamond, headlined by a deep and battle-tested senior class that has been through the grind of postseason baseball.

The Cubs’ biggest asset this spring will undoubtedly be their experience. U-High returns nearly all of its key arms and position players from last year’s state finalist squad, giving Coach Ramsey one of the most seasoned rosters in the classification.

Top Returning Players

-Senior RHP Grant Sunstrom (Louisiana Tech recruit)

The ace of the Cubs’ staff was outstanding last season, logging 72.2 innings with a 7-3 record, 63 strikeouts, a 1.45 ERA, and a stingy .177 opponent batting average. Sunstrom’s poise and command at the top of the rotation make him one of the top right-handers in Louisiana’s 2026 class.

-Senior INF Lane Mixon (Northwestern State recruit)

A table-setter and catalyst in the Cubs’ lineup, Mixon hit .301 last season with 22 RBI, 6 doubles, 2 triples, and 24 stolen bases while posting a .373 on-base percentage. His athleticism and ability to impact the game in multiple ways make him a key piece of the offense once again.

-Senior RHP Brody Mayeux

The senior right-hander was the team’s No. 2 starter last season and will continue to be relied upon for quality innings behind Sunstrom.

-Senior LHP Nicholas Zeringue

A trusted left-hander who filled multiple roles in 2025, Zeringue gives the Cubs valuable versatility and depth on the mound.

-Senior OF Jaris Hamilton (Delgado Community College recruit)

A dynamic defender and top-of-the-line athlete, Hamilton anchors the Cubs’ outfield and uses his elite speed to change games both defensively and on the bases.

-Senior INF/RHP Trey Sotile

One of the team’s most versatile players, Sotile contributes both in the infield and on the mound, offering leadership and consistency.

-Junior RHP Grant Vollmer

A proven junior arm, Vollmer turned in an excellent 2025 season, going 7-1 with 1 save, 48 strikeouts, a 1.61 ERA, and a .177 opponent batting average across 51 innings. He gives U-High another reliable option in what should again be one of the state’s best pitching staffs.

-Junior INF Shepherd Gammon

Gammon was a steady contributor last spring, hitting .269 with 21 RBI and a .424 on-base percentage. Expect him to continue to be a key run-producer in 2026.

The 2026 Cubs will feature a mix of seasoned veterans and a few new faces stepping into everyday roles to replace last year’s graduates. With leadership from a large senior class and the experience gained from last season’s championship run, expectations remain high in Baton Rouge.

Coach Ramsey’s message is clear — the goal, as always, is to be playing for a state championship in May. Given the experience, depth, and talent returning, University Lab once again looks primed to make that a reality.
