Now, last season was nowhere near what the expectations were for Iowa Lakes, ending 10-43 and 2-31 in conference play. Yet, this team was young and inexperienced; what they bring back now are valuable innings and at-bats throughout the entire roster. Freshmen won’t have to carry the load, but rather, experienced sophomores eager to prove themselves. The lineup returns six starters along with an impressive freshman class that will be battling for time. While the rotation did lose 220 innings, they still bring back experienced arms with two freshman looking to make their marks. While expectations can be seen as low for this Iowa Lakes squad, there is much to like and look forward to as we enter the 2026 season.

PITCHERS

While this pitching staff loses over 220 innings on the mound, what to look for heading into the spring is the number of returning sophomores and three new faces that will boost this staff. Four of the five biggest innings eaters depart for Iowa Lakes, but a bright spot is that many last year were spread across the entire staff. Right-hander Adam Timm returns with the most experience after tossing 33 innings, striking out 30 with a 7.91 ERA. Looking to reduce the walks and improve command, Timm looks to be a reliable veteran arm this spring. Another pair of returning sophomores looking to have major roles this season are right-hander Kenryu Seimori and left-hander Reggie York V. In Seimori’s freshman year, he tossed 25.2 innings, striking out 15, while York V tossed 19.1 innings, striking out 25. These two are set to be heavily relied on this season to be major inning eaters. One final returner to the staff looking to have a larger impact than his first year is right-hander Jaxon Hermann. The righty only tossed 13.2 innings, striking out 10. While the walks became an issue, Hermann looks to capitalize on his developing arsenal, touching 90 mph this fall, sitting in the mid 80s.

With Iowa Lakes returning many arms from the year prior, there is still plenty of room for new faces to make their mark. Sophomore Luke Holcomb, a transfer from IU-South Bend, caught eyes this fall during our ICCAC Fall Showcase. The lanky 6-foot-4, 190-pound right-hander was sitting in the upper-80s from a side-arm slot. He was creating deception with a solid profile, landing him in a promising position to be the ace on this staff. Following this are two freshmen who also caught our staff's eye in right-hander Garrett Norick and left-hander Samuel Reinker. Norick looked the part on the mound, attacking hitters early and creating swing-and-miss. The long 6-foot-2 frame showed a two-pitch mix, with the fastball getting up to 89 mph and sweeper sitting upper-70s, gaining -19.5 inches of horizontal movement. Then, with Reinker, this is a towering lefty frame standing in as a 6-foot-3, 190-pound left-hander. In a staff lacking lefty depth, look for Reinker to have an immediate impact.

  • SO. RHP Luke Holcomb, 6-foot-4 and lean at 183, showed a different kind of look — an uptempo delivery with funk in the arm action and a quick path to the plate. He filled the zone with a mix of fastball at 88–89, a firm changeup at 77–79, and a curveball at 72–74, sequencing with savvy.
  • FR. RHP Garrett Norick, wiry at 6-foot and 155 pounds, came right after hitters with a short, uptempo delivery. The fastball worked 88–89 with late sink, and the slider at 78–80 swept more than 16 inches, tunneling tightly off the fastball and giving him a swing-and-miss weapon.

OFFENSE

When it comes to the bats for Iowa Lakes, they strive in depth. Only losing five total on this side of the ball, which includes only three starters. The lineup is going to be filled with experienced bats that showed their potential last season to have major production as sophomores. Heading these retuners are OF Boyd Jones and OF Johnny Marcos. Jones comes back with the most at-bats under his belt with 161 and slashed .286/.315/.453, with six home runs, and 23 RBIs in them. It's an extremely athletic profile, which is the case for the majority of this lineup, running 6.73, with a max EV of 98.1 mph, and 88 mph from the outfield. Now with Marcos, this was one of the more feared bats in the lineup last year. The built 6-foot-3, 220-pound sent eight over the wall, while slashing .363/.419/.597, with 34 RBIs. These two bats will look to lead the lineup heading into the spring.

The experience doesn't stop with these two, as MIF Nick Ryun, C Jace Embry, and INF Spencer Kober look to improve on their freshman year marks heading into the spring. Ryun spent his freshman year slashing .284/.428/.355, with 16 stolen bases and six doubles. A bat looking to continue his development at the top of the lineup. With Embry, he impressed with his round of BP this fall, posting EVs up to 97.1 mph. Looking to continue a strong first year after ending with seven home runs and a .281/.371/.535 slahline. Then rounding out the returning sohmores is INF Spencer Kober, another one of the athletic bats in this lineup. A 6.88 runner, 87 mph across the diamond, with EVs averaging 93.6 mph, topping at 97.7 mph. He will look to improve on his freshman year, where he batted .263 with 13 RBIs and eight stolen bases in 80 at-bats.

With so much experience through the lineup, it’s going to be hard for the freshman to make an immediate impact. Although we have highlighted three who, through this fall and their high school careers, have made it clear they are ready to make an impact heading into the spring. Stating this group of is 1B Grant Dusatko, the 6-foot-4, 240-pound frame has the potential to be one of the loudest bats in the lineup. Posting EVs up to 105.1 mph and bat speed up to 89.5 mph. A loud presence in the box, look to see a major power impact from him this year. Right behind him is Ty Weichel, another athletic mold within the lineup. The right-handed bat ran the 6th fastest 60-time at our ICCAC showcase with a 6.63 time. A twitchy athletic looking to make his name known through the lineup. Now rounding out this trio of freshmen is INF Ayden Wells. The right-hander has an all-around performance this fall, posting an EV up to 99.1 mph, averaging 92.6 mph. While also running a 6.83 60-time. These freshman will all look to have their own impacts this year, but will have to work through a crowded sophomore-heavy lineup.
