2025 Spring Team Preview: Amity (CT)
WOODBRIDGE, Ct. - For the seventh time in his coaching career Sal Capolla’s team brought home a state championship to Amity High School in 2024.
“That was a fabulous team,” the 32nd-year head coach said about last year’s squad that finished 21-6 overall and ranked 49th nationally. “It wasn’t the most talented team, so it was sort of a surprise.”
With the return of a number of key starters from a year ago, the 2025 edition of the Spartans will not surprise anyone this time around despite losing 11 seniors to graduation.
“I like that we have some key guys with experience back,” noted Capolla. “Our pitching will be strong and we have a number of guys returning in key spots.”
Derek Porto, a Merrimack commit, is a three-year starter and is back to play shortstop. Collin Tenney, a Salem State signee, returns to play third base and pitch while the remaining captain, Dylan Agvent, a UMass Boston recruit, is back for another year of starting in center field and will bring his left-handed stick to bat at the top of the order.
Riley Numberg, a senior committed to Trinity, will be a key part of the pitching staff along with Jake Boguniecki, the fourth-ranked sophomore shortstop in New England who was the winning pitcher in last year’s state championship game. Boguniecki will play third in addition to pitch.
Senior Robert Pulie is another starter back in right field.
Two others in the 2025 class are expected to play important roles this year in first baseman Joe Wyskiel and infielder Robbie Salsbury. James Pellegrino “will play somewhere” according to Capolla, with the 19th-ranked junior third baseman in New England joined in the lineup by Justin Minaya, the 19th-rated 2025 outfielder in New England.
“He will be an impact guy for us this year,” Capolla said of Minaya. “He has a lot of tools, a cannon for an arm and he’s fast.”
Behind the plate is where the Spartans must find an answer.
“Filling the catching position is a concern,” Capolla noted. “We lost two catchers from last year, Tim Cap and Sam Gettinger (Stonehill College). I’m not worried, but we’ve got to find our answer behind the dish as well as the right side of the infield. We lost Anthony Lucibello at second base and lost Jack Lewis, a right-handed pitcher who’s now at Western New England.”
Senior Brennan Camus along with Carlo Lombardi are battling for playing time behind the plate with junior Will Cameron expected to see action in the infield.
“I wouldn’t say we’re the favorite, but if we're playing like we expect at the end of the year we’ll give it a shot,” Capolla said about winning an eighth state title. “It’s a possibility.”
