2025 Spring Team Preview: Bishop Feehan (MA)
ATTLEBORO, Ma. - Joe Breen is back into coaching and excited about what lies ahead as mentor of the Bishop Feehan program.
“The school has made some sizable investments in athletics,” related Breen, who coached for five years at Mansfield High School before taking time off in 2020. “They put in a brand new turf field with lights last year and now we have a few of the top players in the area. We hope to take advantage of that. There are some private schools close to us in Rhode Island and Massachusetts and we hope to get out on the field and make a name for ourselves.”
Brody Bumila, the top-rated junior left-handed pitcher in New England and the sixth ranked in the nation, is back after missing part of last season with an injury. The 6-8 240-pound Texas commit will be joined in the rotation by Northwestern recruit Andrew Shute. Called by Breen “our most proven high school pitcher,” Shute is the third-ranked 2026 RHP in New England.
Junior Jack Gasse and senior Ayden Mello, a Lasell University signee, are others that will toe the mound for the Shamrocks in 2025.
“We’re pretty deep with our pitching,” Breen admitted.
Senior Jack Johnson, a Vassar College commit, is one of the team captains and will catch with Connor Pullen, the 30th-rated 2025 catcher in New England, and junior Bryce Heinselman adding depth behind the plate.
Shute and Johnson are slated to see time at first base with Randen May, a team captain who was the league offensive player of the year in 2024, at second base. The 56th-rated senior shortstop in New England is a UMass-Amherst commit.
Junior Owen Mordas, a two-year starter, is back at shortstop with Heinselman and Colin McEwan expected to see action at third base.
Senior Finn McHale returns in center field with senior Ben Cote, a Western New England recruit as a pitcher, in right field. McEwan, senior Pat Leonard and Jake Webster, the 243rd-ranked junior in New England, are other potential outfielders for Bishop Feehan.
“We have a lot returning up the middle so that’s a strength for us,” Breen noted.
It brings a lot of optimism for the new head coach.
“The seniors are clearly ready for a change in the program,” related Breen, who takes over a program that was 11-9 last season and losers in the first round of the playoffs. “They’re excited to be part of a new chapter in the Feehan program. As a first-year head coach, the seniors are making sure everyone knows they have to work hard. They want to make something special out of their last year.
“We know we’re coming off a few subpar seasons but we know these guys have put in the work trying to make something special.”
Breen is of the belief that the pitching has the potential to be dominant.
“If we keep our starting pitchers healthy we can be as good as anyone around,” Breen said. “We also need guys to step up at the plate. After Randen we don’t have a lot of guys that are solidified in their roles.”
One change in the schedule finds league play doubling from six to 12 games.
“It’s a small Catholic school league that’s spread out,” Breen said. “Feehan won the league last year but I don’t know it well.”
