2025 Spring Team Preview: Bishop Hendricken (RI)
WARWICK, R.I. - The 2024 edition of Bishop Hendricken was “one of the best teams we’ve ever had,” according to head coach Ed Holloway. With 14 players back from the 23-0 state championship team it is no wonder the veteran mentor believes “we should be good again.”
It starts behind the plate with the return of leading hitter Braeden Campbell, who averaged .400 batting cleanup last season. The third-rated senior catcher in New England, who is committed to Binghamton, can also play outfield with Merrimack signee Jack Depalma, the 11th-ranked 2025 catcher in New England, another standout behind the plate.
Mason Crain, the fourth-rated 2026 third baseman in New England, will be at the hot corner with junior Cullen Crain likely at shortstop. Cooper Maher, the fifth-rated senior shortstop in New England and a Northeastern commit, returns to pitch and play second.
Senior Cam Dales, a Roger Williams signee, and Will Mascena, the 24th-rated junior outfielder in New England, are battling for time at first.
Frank Tillinghast, a two-year starter ranked 47th among senior outfielders in New England, returns for his senior year in left field with Campbell, Mascena and Parker Boyd, the 38th-rated junior outfielder in New England, in center or left field. Jacob Montenegro, the 38th-ranked senior outfielder in New England, adds depth in the outfield and at first base.
Excitement is in the air around the return of senior southpaw Patrick Clemmey, a Vanderbilt commit who has not pitched the last two years due to Tommy John.
Maher along with senior Gian Lepore and junior Mason Marchessault bring more arms to the Hawks, with Lepore adding depth in the outfield and Marchessault also in the mix at first base or DH.
“The kids are confident we will have a very good team,” Holloway said. “We lost a lot of big-time hitters but I think we have a lot of guys who will step up. I’m looking forward to seeing who will be this year’s surprise, who will come out of nowhere and have a major effect on the team.
“It will all come down to pitching,” added Holloway, who has been part of 17 state championships since taking over as head coach in 1996. “We’re excited to see Patrick Clemmey get on the mound and with Cooper Maher we have two potential top-flight pitchers in the state.”
A schedule that has Bishop Hendricken playing teams like Iona Prep in New York, Notre Dame and Waterford in Connecticut and Xaverian Brothers and Bishop Feehan in Massachusetts, the challenges are certainly ahead.
“We’re excited about playing against such quality out-of-state teams,” Holloway noted. “Pitching is the name of the game and that will be the key. We need Patrick Clemmey to have a big year and we need Cooper Maher to really develop. We also need Mason Marchessault and Mason Crain to come through.
“We also have some good young pitchers in the program and we have high hopes for them to come up, make the team and be able to come in and contribute on the mound.”
With 23 state championships since 1977, there high expectations are a given at Bishop Hendricken.
“With so much success in the program, we have a lot of good players that want to come and be a part of a winning program,” Holloway explained. “We’ve had so many good players over the years.
“We work on defense every day and we have good pitching and some years better hitting. Last year we had a good combination of all phases. We lost so many good players, guys that went to Louisville, UConn, URI and two to Brown. But we should be good again.”
