2025 Spring Team Preview: Colchester (VT)
CHITTENDEN, Vt. - Colchester head coach Tom Perry does not mince words on what his view is about this season even though Gatorade Player of the Year Zach Davis has graduated.
“We have a chance to compete for a state title,” proclaimed Perry, the head coach at Colchester since 2008.
There is no doubt where the strength of the Lakers is this year.
“This is the deepest pitching staff I’ve ever had,” related Perry, who has a 191-91 record at Colchester with five trips to the state semifinals and one to the finals.
Vinny Wagoner, Jackson Pecor and Johnny Luter are all pitchers back for Colchester, Luter the third-ranked junior in Vermont. Wagoner was 2-1 with a 1.77 ERA, striking out 50 in 27.2 innings last season while Pecor was also 2-1 with a 2.33 ERA, fanning 19 in 12 frames. Luter won all three of his decisions on the hill, posting a 2.43 ERA with 29 Ks in 23 innings.
“All want to go on to college and play,” Perry said of the junior trio, which are also being counted on to come through at the plate. Luter led the team in batting a year ago at .400 while Wagoner hit .339 and stole 11 bases and Pecor had a .325 OBP.
Jack Robinson, a Plymouth State commit who hit .265 in 2024, is another key returnee for Colchester along with Rishon Robenstein, who led the team in walks with 15 and on-base percentage at .538.
But Davis, who is now pitching at Bryant, leaves big shoes to replace after batting .339 with 14 RBIs and nine extra-base hits, while also earning Metro Pitcher of the Year honors. Davis finished 4-3 on the mound with a 0.61 ERA, striking out 64 in 45.2 innings.
“Last year’s team was one of the best in the state,” pointed out Perry, whose Lakers were beaten by Burr & Burton 2-1 in the quarterfinals.
Trace Roach, who is now at UConn on an ROTC scholarship, is another big loss from the 2024 team, especially when it comes to leadership.
“We need to find a quality defensive alignment and batting order,” Perry said about his concerns this season.
But success is expected despite the holes to fill.
“I love the players!” Perry explained. “I love the attitude and desire to compete and learn.”
That is something Perry has instilled in the program.
“We are known for having an active bench and being aggressive at the plate,” Perry noted. “We try to get the most out of every player and every situation by simply playing one pitch at a time.”
As for the keys this season, Perry has his view.
“Pitch as we are capable of and learn to play great defense,” Perry said.
