2025 Spring Team Preview: Fairfield Prep (CT)
FAIRFIELD, Ct. - With last year’s team almost all back, Fairfield Prep has high hopes after going through a rebuilding campaign a year ago.
“Our starting lineup is experienced,” explained head coach Rudy Mauritz. “We are strong up the middle and the front end of our rotation has logged a significant number of innings.”
But there is still a lot to be determined.
“We will need to figure out the back end of the rotation and who will fill the supportive roles for the 2025 season,” pointed out the veteran mentor, who begins his 20th season at Fairfield and 26th overall, with a record of 256-158.
Three seniors and seven juniors are among a long list of returning players that also includes a pair of sophomores.
“We have an experienced group eager to compete,” noted Mauritz, who a year ago saw the Jesuits finish 9-11 with a team that had just one starter back from the previous season, winning seven of their last 10 games in 2024. “They bring a great enthusiasm to the ballpark, and want to do what is necessary to have the team succeed.”
Fin Dockwell, JJ Schachinger and Evan Sheffler are back for their final season at Fairfield and expected to play important roles. Dockwell, the 20th-rated senior left-handed pitcher in New England, is a Gettysburg signee who also plays first base and outfield. Schachinger is an outfielder and Sheffler a catcher who is committed to Mass Maritime.
A loaded junior class is being counted on if success is to come, with Boston College commit Ryan Ventrelle, UConn recruit Vinny Lombardo and Northwestern commit Andrew Wong leading the way. Ventrelle is the eighth-rated junior shortstop in New England, Lombardo the second-ranked 2026 outfielder in New England and Wong the 160th-rated junior RHP in the nation.
Infielders Cooper Rotondo and Nick Tamborrino along with outfielders Nick Garofalo and Jack Buck also bring experience to this year’s squad. Jack Nolan, an IF/RHP rated fourth among 2027 third basemen in New England, and Reid Stanton, a RHP/OF ranked 24th among 2027 right-handed pitchers in New England, are sophomores that are also needed to contribute for a team that lost Tommy Farrell (now playing at Gettysburg), Stephen Polizzi and Griffin Fisher to graduation.
“We need to play sound baseball, put the ball in play and do the little things right and well,” Mauritz said about the keys for the coming season. “If each player does the job in front of him we should have a successful season.”
That has been the norm in the program since Mauritz took over the program.
“We are fundamentally sound, athletic and explosive,” the head coach said in describing the program. “Defensively, we look to limit our opponents at-bats by being all over the zone and taking care of the baseball. Offensively, we emphasize allowing our athleticism to take over which gets started by putting the ball in play and being active on the basepaths. We respect 90’ and go hard first to third.”
Admittedly, success does not come easy but expectations are certainly high for the upcoming season according to Mauritz.
“Amity, Daniel Hand and Guilford return excellent teams in the SCC,” Mauritz concluded. “The FCIAC and CCC are sure to produce some great teams this season. I believe that we have the ability to compete with these teams, and winning the SCC championship and Class LL state title are both attainable goals for our team this season.”
