2025 Spring Team Preview: Gorham (ME)
GORHAM, Me. - Already expected to be a state power this season, the return of Wyatt Nadeau to the program brings even more optimism to Gorham and head coach Ed Smith for the 2025 campaign.
“I feel like our strengths this year will be our pitching, leadership and athleticism,” pointed out Smith, who begins his fourth season at the school and second as head coach.
Nadaeu, the second-rated senior in New England and 168th-ranked 2025 right-handed pitcher in the nation, is a Vanderbilt commit.
“After his junior year at prep school he returns to Gorham and we are excited to have him back,” Smith said of the 6-4 253-pounder RHP.
Nadeau is expected to have plenty of help on the mound for the Rams with Jack Karlonas and Hunter Finck being counted on to play major roles in a program that finished 11-7 a year ago, losing to eventual state champion Scarborough 3-1 in the Class A state semifinals.
Karlonas, a left-handed pitcher and first baseman who is a two-way commit to Husson University, was 2-1 with 27 strikeouts in 19.2 innings and a 1.42 ERA last season. Finck, the fifth-ranked sophomore in New England, was 3-0 as a freshman with 39 Ks in 28.1 innings with a 1.23 ERA. Additionally, the top-rated 2027 in Maine batted .273 with a team-high 13 RBIs.
All the pitchers will be in good hands with the return of catcher/third baseman Mason Finck, a four-year starter who has been all-conference three times. A Southern Maine commit, Finck hit .404 while driving in 10 runs a year ago.
Miles Brenner, the 28th-rated junior shortstop in New England, is another major returnee back for his third season as a starter.
“He has always been a great defender, but now as a junior he’s bigger and stronger and looks to improve at the plate,” Smith said of the 10th-ranked 2026 in Maine.
There are big shoes to fill, however, with the graduation of catcher CJ Whitehead, who is now playing at UMass-Dartmouth, and Caden Smith, the team-leader in doubles and stolen bases a year ago who is currently playing basketball at Wheaton College.
“Our weakness last year was our offense,” Smith noted. “We consistently saw the league’s top pitchers last season and I expect this year to be the same. We will look to improve on our approach offensively this year.”
The Gorham mentor is confident the team can continue the strong tradition that has been established.
“The program has been very consistent for the last 10 years or so, regularly making the playoffs and losing in the state championship game in 2019,” Smith explained. “This year we have a great group of kids. They show up and work hard every day, have fun and play the game the right way. I love our athleticism and our leadership.
“Our keys to success this year will be the same as most teams, we need to stay healthy on the mound and put together a good approach at the plate day in and day out,” Smith continued. “There is a lot of good pitching in the league again this year and we will need to be better offensively.”
The Southwestern Maine Activities Association is again expected to be strong with Gorham arguably the favorite.
“Every team in the league is capable of beating anyone on any given day,” Smith concluded. “There are no off days or gimmie games and there is a lot of top-level pitching in the league so it will be a grind.
“I believe we will be at the top of the league this year but we will have to earn it every step of the way. We have a target on our back early so we will need to deal with the expectations. I like our chances and I really like this group of kids.”
