2025 Spring Team Preview: Hamden Hall (CT)
HAMDEN, Ct. - Can Hamden Hall win another title after capturing its third straight New England Preparatory School Athletic Council championship last season?
“We should be in the mix for the FAA’s and the NE’s,” head coach Brad Chernovetz said in reference to the Fairchester Athletic Association and the NEPSAC.
Three Division I commits back is a major reason for the optimism, with the return of UConn recruits Amato Civitello and Logan Charboneau along with Rhode Island commit Nic Scillia. Civitello is the seventh-rated junior shortstop in New England who is the closer for Hamden Hall, Charboneau the top-rated senior first baseman in New England and Scillia the 13th-ranked 2026 right-handed pitcher in Connecticut.
Civitello batted .400 while recording five saves with a 1.00 ERA last season. Scillia, who hit .300, was 9-1 with a 2.48 ERA, throwing 45 innings with 44 strikeouts. Charboneau, who plays outfield, first base and pitches, carried a .375 average at the plate while going 3-1 on the mound with 26 Ks in 19.2 innings with a 2.49 ERA.
Junior RHP Billy Cole and senior Asher Wasserman, a Duke football commit as a linebacker, are other key returnees for the Hornets.
Cole fanned 24 in 23 innings with a 2-0 record while Wasserman belted seven home runs with a .275 batting average.
More help with pitching comes from AJ Park, who had a 1.00 ERA in seven innings in 2024, and Eric Jagielow, who threw 14.1 frames a year ago.
There are some big holes to fill, however, with the graduation of pitchers Gavin Lyons and Ryan Lynch. Lyons, who is now pitching for Texas A&M, was 14-0 while Lynch was 5-0 in addition to playing first base. Leading hitter Brady Chernovetz, a catcher now at Southern Connecticut, must also be replaced along with center fielder Will MCGarry and DH Nick Criscuolo.
But the Hamden Hall head coach is confident his team will remain strong up the middle with Civitello at shortstop, Carlos Reyes at second base, Jey Scanlon in center field and Luca Faulkner behind the plate.
“We will be strong offensively with a deep lineup, but our pitchers will need to throw strikes,” Chernovetz said.
That is one of the many things the program has shown the knack for doing well according to the Hamden Hall mentor.
“We are known for playing good defense and pitching well,” Chernovetz explained. “We don’t give a team more than 21 outs, we make them swing the bats.”
Sophomores Leo Dottori (.250), Sean Raymond and Park are newcomers being counted on this season to help at the dish.
“If this team matures and becomes unselfish, we could have a pretty special year.”
