2025 Spring Team Preview: Lawrence Academy (MA)
GROTON, Ma. - With an experienced infield and three top-line pitchers, it is no wonder Lawrence Academy head coach Chris Margraf believes his 2025 squad “should be as much or more competitive as last year.”
Senior first baseman Daven Allard led the team in hitting last year with a .421 average and returns to an infield that includes senior shortstop Jordan Henriquez, sophomore second baseman Will Broderick and junior third baseman Dan Nuti. Allard is the 12th-rated 2025 first baseman in New England and Henriquez, a Dayton commit, is the 11th-ranked senior SS in New England.
Senior class president Boden Belanger is penciled in to catch with the Franklin & Marshall recruit receiving pitches from a trio of standouts led by John Paone, a Duke commit rated the number one right-handed senior pitcher in New England. The 17th-ranked 2025 RHP in the nation will be aided by a newcomer in Logan Forgie, the top-rated 2026 left-handed pitcher in Ontario.
Senior Laz Giardina, a hockey standout who threw 22.2 innings last season and was the winning pitcher in the league semifinals a year ago, is another strong arm for the Spartans, which were 14-7 overall last year and 11-3 in league play, losing 2-0 to St. Sebastian’s in the finals. Senior Sam Campbell adds depth to the pitching staff according to Margraf, who sees a lot of promise in this year’s squad.
“We lost three good captains from last year but we have really good senior leadership,” noted Margraf, who points to eight seniors as the “backbone” of the leadership. “We’ve had some consistency being at the top of the league and the kids are battle tested. They buy in well to what I’m trying to sell them. They’re seasoned, they’ve been to the top and they tasted it last year. Now the core group is back.”
That includes center fielder Jack Janowsky, who is expected to hit at the top of the order. The 41st-ranked senior outfielder in New England will be joined in the outfield by junior right fielder Ryan Blaisdell. Giardina, who hit .417 a year ago, will also see time in the outfield and DH in addition to pitch.
“The first five in our order are legit, and that’s not even our strength,” pointed out Margraf, who has a 168-103-2 record in 26 years as head coach. “Good defense and pitching are our strengths.”
Still, there is nothing given according to the head coach, who has led the Spartans to championships in 2011 and 2023.
“Our biggest concern is the league, it’s so competitive,” Margraf said about the Independent School League. “We’re going to play fast, good fundamental baseball. We’ve got to be ready for every scenario.”
The bats are the key in the eyes of the veteran mentor.
“What are we going to get from our offense?” Margraf said. “Can we give our defense and pitching a chance? Plus, we don’t want to get anyone injured. We’re pretty thin. But our top nine can play with anyone.”
