2025 Spring Team Preview: Milton Academy (MA)
MILTON, Ma. - After an 8-5 first season as head coach at Milton Academy, Brendan Morrissey has a lot of optimism when it comes to year number two.
“We are a young team with a lot of potential,” Morrissey noted. “Seeing guys step up this year and take on new roles will be fun to watch.”
Morrissey, who led Milton High School to three Bay State League championships and back-to-back MIAA state titles in 2022 and 2023, looks to three returnees for leadership in the upcoming campaign - Davis Kahn, Jacob McNeil and Brandon West.
Kahn, a 6-8 215-pound right-hander who also plays first base, is committed to Harvard. McNeil is a left-handed hitting junior centerfielder while West is the 27th-ranked 2026 shortstop in New England.
“All three players were in the top to middle of our order last year,” pointed out Morrissey, who had an 81-32 record at Milton High, including a 17-3 mark in the playoffs before coming over to Milton Academy last year. “They look to build off a successful season and take the next steps.”
Six starters are gone among the nine seniors lost to graduation from the 2024 squad, with starting pitcher Matt Higgins (now at Colby College) and middle infielders Curt Heath and Andrew Millington (now playing at Bentley and Hamilton, respectively) the biggest holes to fill in 2025.
“The strength of our team should be the pitching staff,” Morrissey related. “We have a few returners looking to take on bigger roles this season.”
A pair of sophomores, left-handed pitcher Jameson Gray and outfielder Cole Kotkowski, are expected to be a big part of the plans this year.
“Jameson will be a highly-recruited arm,” explained Morrissey about the second-rated 2027 southpaw in New England. “Cole is a talented athlete that can hit for power and cover ground in the outfield.”
The 12th-ranked sophomore outfielder in New England will be part of the keys to success this year in the eyes of the second-year mentor of the Mustangs.
“Having the young players step up and contribute will be vital to how well we do this season,” Morrissey said. “Our lineup will look vastly different than last season.”
It is part of the program’s plan of reloading year after year according to the head coach.
“Our focus is on developing players so they are prepared to play at the next level,” Morrissey explained.
Being successful in the Independent School League is always one of the aspirations every season for the Mustangs.
“Our goal every year is to win the league,” Morrissey concluded. “We have a great group of kids and we can’t wait to get the season going.”
