2025 Spring Team Preview: Seekonk (MA)

SEEKONK, Ma. - Three straight trips to the state finals with back-to-back Division 4 championships puts a bullseye on the back of Seekonk in 2025. But head coach Joe Demelo does not mince words when talking about the upcoming season.

“This senior class is probably the best we’ve ever had,” noted Demelo, who enters his 14th season as head coach with a 167-101 record. “This senior class has seven that started as freshmen. We could see they were a little better, a little more developed with a little more wanting to and buying into the things we need to do.”

Javi Borges and Jack Lasalle are being counted on to form a one-two punch on the mound for the Warriors in 2025, with last year’s top pitcher Tyler Kropis (7-1, 63.2 innings, 124 Ks, 0.55 ERA) being a DH-only this season. Borges, who came over from Venezuela, was 3-0 with a 0.553 ERA a year ago, striking out 45 in 25.1 innings while Lasalle was 2-1 with three saves and a 1.598 ERA, fanning 28 in 30.2 frames.

Depth on the mound will come from Cole Arruda and Colin Lush, who combined to throw 20.2 innings last year with four wins, while freshmen LHP Cooper Flynn and RHP Cartern Martins bring promise.

Jonathan Tawa split time behind the plate a year ago and it is “his job to lose” Demelo said about the catching position. The senior will be backed up by Brayden McBride, who will also  pitch in relief, and freshman Andrew Schebel.

Junior Austin Robinson will be at first base with Kropis, the second-ranked senior first baseman in New England and an East Tennessee State commit, now relegated to DH. Robinson had 59 plate appearances last year while Kropis batted .357 with 18 RBIs.

Johnny Payne, a Salem State signee, is back to play second base with Borges and Lush the shortstops. Borges hit .350 a year ago with 24 runs scored while Lush batted .250.

Connor Flynn, the starting third baseman the past three seasons who averaged .251 while scoring 18 runs last year, is moving to center field leaving third up for grabs.

Greyson Baldizar, the 57th-rated senior outfielder in New England and a Worcester Polytechnic Institute commit, is back for his third season starting in right field with Arruda, another potential outfielder. Baldizar hit a team-high .362 a year ago.

Avian Darosa will be a utility player for the Shamrocks.

“We have a lot of guys with experience,” Demelo said in regard to what he likes about this year’s team. “They’ve played since they were freshmen and have played in three state championship games. What we need is everyone else to contribute. Incoming freshmen need to contribute because we don’t have a huge amount of depth.

“Once we knock down those open positions, corner outfield and third base, this team will be fine. If it doesn’t work out, we’ll have to move Connor back to third. We just need to make the plays.”
