2025 Spring Team Preview: Westerly (RI)
WESTERLY, R.I. - Division 2 state champs two of the past three seasons, Westerly will now make the big bump up to Division 1 this year.
“Our team is excited for the challenge of playing in Rhode Island's highest classification,” head coach Ron Sposato Jr. said. “This team has passion for the game and loves showing up ready to work everyday with a positive attitude.”
The 10th-year mentor, who is 100-100 at Westerly with state titles in 2022 and 2024, is ready for the challenge ahead despite having one of the smallest enrollments in the state with approximately 640 students.
“Our program is known for its rich tradition,” Sposato pointed out. “Many players that come through our program have had fathers, uncles or brothers come through before them. This creates a culture and atmosphere of pride and respect through our program.”
There have been five D-2 state titles in school history (1940, 1944, 1992, 2022, 2024), with last season’s team finishing 22-6-1.
“We pride ourselves on great pitching, fundamentally sound defense and playing with full focus and effort for seven innings,” Sposato explained.
Division 2 Player of the Year Zach Miner is back for the Bulldogs along with pitching ace Michael Poole bringing a lot of optimism. Miner was 4-0 with four saves and did not permit an earned run while hitting .319 with 22 RBIs. A University of Maine commit, Poole, the 14th-ranked senior RHP in New England, went 6-0 with a 1.99 ERA, fanning 83 in 45.2 innings.
Tom Fiore, the 68th-ranked junior outfielder in New England, who also fits into the pitching plans, is back after hitting .356 with eight doubles and 25 RBIs as a sophomore. Luke Gwaltney, who hit .325 starting in the outfield as a freshman, is another returnee along with catcher Grayson Simmons and shortstop Jayden Parker.
Senior Chase Collins is another starting pitcher with junior James Hooper along with sophomores Jack Zerbarini, Tyler Calcone, Cam Macdonald, Matteo Hackett and Gwaltney adding to a very deep staff.
“Our offense is a question mark,” Sposato pointed out. “Competing in Division 1, we will need players to step up to fill the void of Jack Tenuta and Drew Bozek. Tenuta, who is currently playing at Eastern Connecticut, was 5-2 with a 2.05 ERA while Bozek was a four-year starter in center field who hit .322 with five doubles last season.
“Our keys to success are throwing strikes, making the routine plays in the field, and timely hitting at the plate,” Sposato said. “We expect to compete day in and day out in Division 1. Our goals haven't changed, and that’s to win a state championship. We want to be playing our best baseball at the end of May and make a run for the Division 1 championship.”
