Progress Report: LHP Michael Bernas

By Drew Locascio
Illinois Scouting Director

As we dig through the players and numbers from this past winter, we are taking a look at a "Progress Report" feature that highlights players that have shown significant improvement in their game; whether it's on the mechanical end, performance wise, physicality or in the measurable statistic department. The "Progress Report" can be a minor improvement in recent months or a substantial transformation over time. Today we take a look at:

Scouting Report

Most Recent Event:

Lockport Preseason ID (2.17.20)

Previous Event:
Underclass Invitational (2.17.19)

Crunching The Numbers:

FB Velocity (Peak): 83 mph (Previous 78 mph)

FB Velocity (Range): 80-82 mph (Previous 76-77 mph)

What Did We See?
Bernas has long been a highly-competitive, strike thrower, with a three-pitch mix. The 5-foot-9, 160-pound left-hander has been getting outs at the varisty level since he was a freshman topping out in the low-70s. Fast forward to Bernas' junior year and we have seen his fastball velocity steadily tick up into the low-8's while the rest of his offerings have sharpened up as well.

Bernas is an under-the-radar, uncommitted junior, whose stuff has always played up thanks to his polish, poise and competitiveness.

Stay tuned over the next couple of months as we will continue to check-in on prospects throughout the state of Illinois who have made noticeable improvements to their games.
